Sevylor? 12V / 12 lb. Thrust Trolling Motor Review

This Motor is good! However... If you buy an inflatable Sevylor boat (Which work great) and plan to use this motor for cruising around, you will be disappointed. On "fast" speed, the motor travels at about the pace of a slow average walk. If you are out using this motor for fishing, this is however about the right pace. One advantage of this motor is it only draws a maximum of 12 amps at the fastest pace. It will run the small accessory batter (another option to buy) for a solid 45 minutes. I bought a Large Everlast battery, which will be able to run the motor for SIX HOURS! For the Price... I would advise spending a littlemore cash and buying a trolling motor with24lbs thrust or more

Minnkota Mkr-12 Quick Connector Plug Review

Minnkota Mkr-12 Quick Connector Plug
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought these quick connectors to go along with the MinnKota Trolling Motor Power Center. When the quick connect arrived I discovered that the negative connection eye was the correct size but the positive connection eye was actually SMALLER! So small in fact that even if my goal was to attach it directly to the battery it would have been the wrong size. Needless to say, my choices were return it or drive to the local auto parts store and purchase the correct eyes. Decided it was easier and faster just to replace the eyes. Purchased water proof (shrink tube, not cheap but the right way to do it) eyes which IMO is what MinnKota should have used in the first place at this price. Bottom line, after correcting the problem they work as designed but can't recommend them. This should have been an easy no hassle purchase. You could probably make your own set by rummaging through a junk yard for a few minutes.

Sevylor Rechargeable 12 Volt Battery Review

Sevylor Rechargeable 12 Volt Battery
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have used several of these batteries for many years in the intended line of work. Powering Sevylor low thrust trolling motors, ie 5/10lb and 12lb thrust. This is a 7Ah battery that weights 6lbs. Most of the time (depending on the thrust setting) I can run for 1.5 - 3.5hrs per charge. With a spare battery in the boat it keeps me always safe and within a reach of the lake shore.
I do have a Minn Kota 30lb motor, and the user manual recommends a 105Ah battery that weights 70lbs. My guess is that a 40lb version needs a 140Ah battery that weights 100lbs. Please do not replace a 140Ah/100lbs battery with a 7Ah/6lbs one and expect it to last more then 10-15 minutes!!!

Product Description:
Keep your Sevylor SBM motor running smoothly with this rechargeable 12-volt battery. Equipped with both the battery itself and a plug-in charger, the battery provides roughly 45 minutes of continuous run time at full speed. (The battery offers additional run time at slower speeds and with intermittent use.) The battery offers a 7 amp-hour capacity and charges fully overnight.
About Sevylor
In 1948 in Vitry, a small suburb of Paris, France, Berco Grimbert created an electronics company called Societe Electronique de Vitry, or SEVY for short. Soon, a friend of Grimbert's from New York commissioned SEVY to produce high frequency welding machines capable of fusing a new material called PVC (poly vinyl chloride). SEVY's machines worked very well and the American friend developed a very successful business manufacturing swimming pool related products. He then taught SEVY how to work with PVC.
One of the first PVC products SEVY produced was inflatable bathtub called Dou Dou. It was an instant hit in postwar France--mothers could bathe their children even where no facilities were available. The media hailed Dou Dou as a significant invention. Soon, SEVY added small pools and flotation devices such as rings, beach balls, and inflatable swim jackets to its product line. Safe, hygienic products, made of PVC and designed for portability, durability and convenience, became the SEVY trademark.
The company quickly outgrew its small facilities in Vitry. Mr. Grimbert accepted an attractive offer from the French government to take over a defunct textile factor in the tiny Alsatian village of Buhl. After establishing its new headquarters, the company added the letters "lor" to its name, and became Sevylor. In French, l'or means gold. By coincidence, or possibly fate, Sevylor has proven to be "as good as gold" to its owners, retailers, consumers, and employees.

Actually this motor is the bottom of the line in cost but is a real winner.I sold my 10 year old MinnKota which was still running great simply to upgrade to a new motor with about the same features. This one has 45 pounds of thrust whereas my old one had only 30 pounds.A great feature in this motor is the "battery test" which tells me how much life is left in the battery.Runs great.Feels solid.I am sure it will give me another 10 years or more of satisfaction...as my prior MinnKota did.

MinnKota Trolling Motor Power Center Review

MinnKota Trolling Motor Power Center
Average Reviews:

I'm very pleased with this box. It's not weak or flimsy and has molded in lift handles on each end. Its inside dimensions are 13"L X 7"W X 9"H. The vented cover has access for cables on either end and has a pretty sturdy handle attached that will tip down and lay flat and includes a steel backing plate inside for reinforcement and strength. Inside the cover is a plastic plate covering the internal wiring but can be easily accessed by removing two small screws in the cover. Underneath is the trolling motor terminal wiring, the circuit breakers, and the 12 AWG wiring for the accessory terminals. On top of the cover the battery charge indicator light illuminates when you press the test button. Instructions are also printed on the cover. The 10 AMP circuit breaker is wired to both cigarette lighter style accessory terminals, one on each end, and the 60 AMP circuit breaker is wired for the trolling motor accessory terminals. Also includes a nice sturdy belt to hold the cover on with and easy to use connector, not a buckle, and a pair of plastic hold down brackets if you need them. This box is very well thought out and built for its intended purpose. I can't think of anything else I'd want from it.

...if you own deep cycle batteries.I bought one of these in 2001 as an experiment to desulphate eight 6 volt 225 amp hour deep cycle batteries. The RV park where we were staying used them in their golf carts. They were going to throw 6 Trojan 225 ah batteries in the dumpster. These batteries were in bad shape as evidenced by the constant 6 amps being drawn after being hooked up to their "super" charger for many hours.Essentially, these batteries were so sulphated that they would not accept any more charge. With many chargers the charge current will drop to "0" as battery resistance increases when fully charged.

I mentioned tossing the batteries in the dumpster might be illegal. If they let me have them to do some tests and possibly recover them, I would dispose of them properly if I had no luck.I had just installed a solar panel system with a 2500 watt inverter on my 5th wheel and had only 1 pair of golf cart batteries that was already at least 2 years old.I needed more reserve battery power and calculated that I would need at least 6 of these batteries for the inverter to be of any real use to me.When using batteries in this manner, it is best to use batteries that are in similar condition and ideally from the same lot.Six new batteries were going to cost about $520 with tax.

I got them back to my rig and baselined the charge they would accept on my 10 amp charger.Indeed, they were not accepting any more charge. I paired these old batteries in series to get four 12 volt configurations and spent the next 4 weeks (1 week per pair) on this desulphator.I continued this process until my charger's ammeter would go to zero when the batteries were full, an indication that they were now in good shape.Ultimately, 2 of the batteries would prove to be unrecoverable, but the other 4 plus the 2 I already owned eventually recovered about 90% of their original amp hour capacity based on some standard tests I ran.

My inverter, combined with these recovered batteries, would run my 15,000 BTU air conditioner for nearly an hour, more than enough time to cool our 5th wheel while preparing and consuming lunch in 106 temps in Ca. deserts. The batteries would be nearly fully recharged by the solar panels and charge line from the tow vehicle by the time we reached our destination for the evening. With loving maintenance and care, they had lasted another 5 years providing countless hours of dry camping service! Finally, in 2006, I replaced them with new ones before an extended camping trip.

This charger/desulphator requires 115 vac and a minimum of 11 volts in the battery before you connect to it.So, if your battery is dead, be sure to bring it up the 11 volt minimum before hooking the unit up or it could overheat and be ruined. Also, most of the cheaper old style battery chargers don't have any voltage regulation. Consequently, the voltage these chargers supply to a fully charged battery can exceed well over 14 volts and will eventually "cook" the electrolyte out if you leave them hooked up.They can also overheat the battery, permanently damaging the thinner plate structure of automotive (starting batteries). The VDC model I bought in 2001 can be left on to maintain the charge in lead acid batteries.Check your operator instructions to be sure.

Shortly after recovering these batteries, I bought another desulphator from an Arizona solar supplier capable of desulphating a 1600 a/h battery bank that operates only off of the battery bank. This constant desulphating process along with proper battery maintenance is probably what helped sustain these batteries for an additonal 5 years. In the absence of a desulphator, deep cycle batteries should be "equalized".The interval depends on usage.I was doing it monthly. The equalization process requires a special charger and can be hard on batteries.Desulphation performs a similar function without the harshness of equalization.Desulphation plus judicial use of equalization can extract maximum life out of your deep cycle batteries.I wouldn't be without either one of these desulphators or a 3 or 4 stage battery charger.

A final note:Never let your batteries sit in a discharged condition. As a battery discharges, the sulphate that forms will be easier to return to solution whn prmptly recharged. If you let it sit, the sulphate can harden and be nearly impossible to return to solution.

I installed this for my 4 very large house batteries on my RV. Since it cost about $1800 dollars to replace those batteries I am interested in getting as long a life as possible. It has been in place for about 2 weeks and so far it is doing what I expected. The batteries hold a charge longer than before. This type of battery in Arizona normally lasts about 4 years, and this set is 18 months old and beginning to show its age.But with this device installed they are back to about95% of what they were when they were new.My only complaint is about the temperature sensor that can be used with the unit, it does not come with the device, but is an extra cost option. I think it should be included since it provides a feature of the device.
