Brunton SOLARIS 52 CIGS Foldable Solar Panel (Black/Silver, 12 Volt) Review

Brunton SOLARIS 52 CIGS Foldable Solar Panel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a bit of a technophile, and gadgets like thin film solar panels really raise my eyebrows. Aside from the WOW factor, there is the practical application of the device.

I'm in the Army, and two things are important to me. Portable power and ease of transport. I have owned Brunton Solar products before, namely the Solaris 25,and it did a terrific job providing me power but at the cost of size and limited use for high power consuming devices. The Brunton Solaris 52 was the answer.

Other solar products tell you that they can charge portable devices....but how many of them can actually RUN them. The answer is a resounding zip....zero....nada. The Solaris 52 can power your device, and provide a trickle charge to other applications. It is voltage regulated once devices are connected, so while the panels can produce upwards of 28 volts....it is paired down to 12 volts for your devices.

The Solaris 52 is about the size of a regular textbook. The folding cover has a Velcro closed pocket for the three types of cables provided with the device, and even with those cables in the front pocket the device presents a minimal profile in your pack. The panels are applied to a thin type of waterproof canvas. It's a sturdy material which retains the folding pattern of the panels so set up an tear down are a snap.

I tested this unit late on an overcast day. I live in Kansas, so I am not in one of the peak sun belts, and I tested this unit during one of the coldest months in this region. The panel was completely unfolded, I connected it to my Solo 15, and even with a considerable amount of cloud cover the device kicked out the promised 12 volts of DC. I watched the charged device closely to see how much tinkering I would have to do to get maximum output from the panels....the answer...NONE! I was amazed by just how simple, elegant and effective this device truly turned out to be.

I continued to run tests with my voltmeter and found that on top of the steady 12 volts I was able to use the available second power adaptor port to charge my cellphone at the same time. This additional flow was no where near what was being drawn by my Solo 15, but it was still more than enough to charge my phone very quickly.

What Brunton has produced here is an efficient, lightweight and extremely capable portable power plant that will require no maintenance from the user due to the self-healing qualities of the newly developed CIGS cells. All the device needs is a little cleaning with a cloth every now and then to remove dirt or debris...that's it!

The price is a little halting for most. I Realize that, but rest assured you are paying for quality and the assurance that you will have electricity anywhere you need it as long as the sun is in the sky. That kind of reassurance is truly worth he price. As the CIGS technology becomes more mainstream, which it will, expect prices to drop. Or just be a savvy consumer....I picked my Solaris 52 up here on Amazon for around $680. A steal in my opinion.

American Hunter? 12V Multi-use Solar Charger Review

American Hunter? 12V Multi-use Solar Charger
Average Reviews:

I ordered this item to use on my boat as a trickle charger for the 12v Battery. The item in the photo is in a plastic case and the photoappears to be the charger I have seen on other boats. That is why I placed the order. Unfortunately, I was shipped a different model in a metal casing -- which does not appear to be as weather proof. Rain and Saltwater appear to able to puddle and leak through seams in the corner. I doubt if the metal casing will be as corrosion resistant, durable, or as eco-friendly as the plastic unit pictured.

There were no instructions or specs provided for the unit. It is not clear how the mounting bracket should be installed. This unit may be fine indoors, in a car, or a dry environment.,but I doubt it will be found very durable in weather.

On the plus side, the unit appears to have more cell and may generate more amps than the unit photoed. Also, shipping was very, very, fast. Probably faster than anything I have ever ordered. In less than 4 days and it was at my front door.

The previous reviewer said these cost more than $8 per watt. But the current price of $6750 for 1230 watts calculates out to $5.49.This puts them in the range the previous reviewer himself said was the price we should be expecting. So I don't see these as out of the ball park. The only way I know to do a lot better is to do it yourself - start with individual cells and solder them together, then figure out a mounting etc.Not something everyone wants to do.

Initially, I want to warn people who are amateurs like me that the MC (Multi Contact) cables that Amazon recommended for this solar panel WILL NOT WORK and the correct cables, apparently, are not available on Amazon. What you need is referred to as Multi-Contact Solarline 2 on some sites or MC4 on other sites. Yes, confusing for a newb. Fortunately, I found adapters on eBay that will link the newer cables from the solar panel to the older cables Amazon recommended. They are called: Solar Panel Power Cable Adapter MC3 Female to MC4 Male - you'll also need male to female.
Hope this saves others an expensive le$$on.
I'll update this review when I receive the adapters from eBay....

UPDATE: These are good little panels at about $53/amp. I chose these instead of the 85 watt panels because I am making a portable power setup - these are about 10 inches smaller. The 85 watt panels are almost twice the amps for about $100 more.
http://www.amazon.com/HQRP-Mono-crystalline-Anodized-Aluminum-Mousepad/dp/B002OSAB2I

Just be aware the connectors on this panel are the new MC4 Solarline 2, not the old MC3 Solarline 1 that Amazon was selling.
If you bought the old cables as I did, the adapters to connect the old cables to the newer connectors of the solar panel can be found on eBay here:
[...]

The male to female adapters are further down the page. If you don't find it there, the seller for the above eBay link sells both. You would need both male and female.

when you purchase something like this, you would want to have all the technical specifications IN ADVANCE so you are not surprised.... so this is what you would really get if order this one:
FeederMax#20578 12-volt solar charger. It is NOT the one pictured with the clips, but it does have a protective flex conduit around the cable. It is sold as a solar pannel (which it is of course) but what it is really made for is a very low power charger- specifically it is only 1.26Watts.... ya just can't do much with that.with no load on it, in bright sun it generates 20 volts (so be careful with small devices) but the box says max 18V.
So if you are a hunter and need a to charge something small for low use, this might be great, but other applications- not so much.

Go Power! GP-RV-95 95-Watt Solar Kit with 25 Amp Digital Regulator Review

Go Power GP-RV-95 95-Watt Solar Kit with 25 Amp Digital Regulator
Average Reviews:

I bought this Go Power! 95 watt solar kit from a local RV dealer early this year. I liked this panel because it was one of the smallest panels that I could find that still put out a lot of power. I have not had to worry about dead batteries since I had the kit installed on my travel trailer. The panel really does get power even in overcast days. This kit comes with a 25 amp charge controller so I can add more panels to the system down the road without changing the regulator, although I don't think I need to at this time. The display shows the voltage of the batteries and current that the panel is putting into my batteries. All in all the kit does what it claimed to do and I am very satisfied with the system.

Brunton SolarFlat Rigid Solor Panel Review

Brunton SolarFlat Rigid Solor Panel

Seems well constructed.Has an aluminum frame as mentioned in the description. My only suggestion to make it truly weather proof would be a slightly better seal on the rear terminal block housing.I may silicon it or do something to better seal it for the environment I will be using it in.I considered sealing around the frame but this would seem redundant. The frame appears to just provide physical as opposed to environment protection for the panel. The panel itself seems to be sealed by virtue of how it is constructed.

It also comes with a nice selection of adapters(Cigarette Lighter, Alligator clamps, bare ended pigtail), and an LED adapter plug to check function.I will be using it to trickle charge a battery in a 16KW Backup Generator at a vacation property. The battery is normally charged by the supplied power but only when in Auto Mode.I turn the unit off typically when not occupying the home and therefore the battery runs down.

Brunton 26 Watt Foldable Solar Array Review

Brunton 26 Watt Foldable Solar Array
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I like this panel, I like it a lot.Right now I use it to charge a all of my electronics. It folds up nicely, and doesn't weigh much.I agree with the other posters on the positive things about these panels.

These panels as individuals (not linked) are serving me and my teams very well in Iraq.We use them to power everything from MP3 Players and cell phones to advanced GPS tracking systems.

There's only one problem I have, and that is linking more than two panels together. The instructions and box say it can be done, and the box says it includes a linking cable, but there is nothing that says how.You are supposedly able to link up to three panels together, but I am unable to accomplish this no matter how I configure the cables. I've written directly to Brunton's service department for guidance, but after a month I've only gotten the read receipts from them.No answer so far.No one on any blog or forum can tell me how this is done. They are expensive, so finding someone that has bought more than one is rare.

All three panels came with the exact same cables, so I don't think I'm missing anything. There are two connection ports on each panel (it will charge two small items at the same time). As far as cables go you get one with clamps (like the kind that connects to a car battery), one female car cigarette lighter-style outlet, and another cable that has four adapters on one end and a single adapter (for plugging into the panel) on the other.

You have to use the four-ended cable to link panels. The problem is that when you plug the end with four ends into a panel there is no more room to plug in another cable. The two prongs sticking out of the sides prevent this.

Anyone with one panel could see what I mean.Try plugging both ends of your linking cable into your one panel, as would be the case on the middle panel in a series of three. Then consider how you would link three of them together.

I would love to hear from anyone that has accomplished linking more than two of these together.

Linking them together would allow us to power (real time) our field laptops and mini-satellites, we could even recharge our military satcom radio batteries.Unfortunately this isn't the case yet.

The panel is excellent and I like it a lot.I gave it a three star rating because it claims to be able to do something that it cannot (link three panels). The instructions are also lacking in this area.Brunton's customer service also leaves something to be desired, which should be your only negative consideration if you're buying only one.

Update:

I finally got a reply from Brunton concerning linking the panels. Here it is:

"To your question... The four-pronged linking cable can make the
connection between panels a bit tight. Admittedly, the design isn't the
best, but I've got three of our 26s here, hooked them up, and read
increased amperage. On the panels where you're forced to use both the
single and multi-tipped wire, I've found it's best to turn the four-tip
plug perpendicular to the flat ground, making it easier to fit the
single wire. I'll be the first to say it isn't pretty. It creates a
slight fold in the panel, and doesn't allow it to sit completely flat,
but it does make the connection, and since there's no solar receiver
over the output, it doesn't affect the efficiency.

As I said, the multi-prong cord isn't the best design. It's something
I'm trying to get them to change in the development department. Keep in
mind that hooking multiple panels together doesn't increase the total
voltage coming out of your last panel, but rather simply increases the

So I broke out my panels and gave it a try.Yes, by bending the panel you can make the two fit. This causes me some real problems. My initial intent was to take some cord and tie the panels down (using the nicely grommeted holes in each corner).I can't do this because the corner that's bent can't be tied down tightly. When I pull on the corner that's bent down (see pic), you can hear the plastic under strain. The four prong outlet tries to straighten out with no where to go, when you do this.I wouldn't want to tie the panel down tightly for fear of breaking something.

The answer to this of course is to make your own single male-male cable. In the rest of the email the service rep offered to send me some cables and cords that I could splice together.

One other thing I noticed is that the female cigarette outlet is completely smooth on the inside, there are no ridges or insets.Any male connector you insert into it will not "lock" into place. There is some resistance that will keep it from just falling out, but it doesn't take much to come loose.I don't think this would be a problem if the panel were laying flat.I imagine that if it were hung up the weight of some cables could cause it to come out. I've had no problems at all with powering any device using this outlet.

Update:* Added another image showing the hook up to an EEE ASUS*

I also own an Asus Eee PC 900 16G.One of the prongs on the four ended cable will fit directly into the laptop. It being such a small laptop the panel WILL run it real time while charging the battery (just like it was plugged into the wall).

According to Brunton the panel kicks out 26 Watts, and says it's at 12 Volts. This means that

12 Volts X 2.2 Amps = 26 Watts

(i'm rounding slightly up on the Amps)

The EEE ASUS Power pack says it has an output of :

12 Volts X 3 Amps = 36Watts

There's obviously a little play in here, but the Brunton panel is using the same Volts at less amps, so it's safe to plug it into your EEE PC.In testing this personally it did in fact run the laptop real time and charge the battery at the same time.

I would raise my review to four stars (I can't modify it), because the panel does do what it says it will do, but it has a design flaw that makes it hard to deal with.

4th Update:

For some reason all the pictures I uploaded months ago are now gone.I don't know if that's an Amazon thing, or what.I'll try to replace them.

Might as well say something about the panel....

It's been over a year and a half and it's still holding up, no problems with wear and tear.I'm very pleased.

I would have thought that it would charge more items. It would not charge a black berry curve or an iphone 3g. It does work well with my solar panel to charge the batteries or my ipod.

Be Prepared? AA Solar Charger Review

Be Prepared? AA Solar Charger

This solar charger is one of the best configurations that I've come across. It managed to charge 4xAA batteries while sitting on my vehicle's dashboard during an overcast day. I figure that if it can pull a charge from the sun through both the clouds and the UV screen of the windshield glass while still being able to fold into something that is about wallet sized then it absolutley earns a place in my backpack.

There are a few things to note that aren't mentioned in the item description:
1. This only has four gromments, not six.
2. It is NOT waterproof/water resistant in any way. A single raindrop on the charging circuit will likely short it out.
3. The batteries can be a little difficult to pull out of the charger. You can't grip the battery by the sides and pull. I've always needed to use my fingernails or something like a key to pry them out.

All in all, I'd say this is the best options out there for keeping your AA flashlights, GPS, and other gizmos powered while enjoying the great outdoors.

Amorphorous 6/12 Volt Solar Panel Battery Maintainer- Model 1 Review

Amorphorous 6/12 Volt Solar Panel Battery Maintainer- Model 1

Here in Holland you could by them for 10 euro's. The voltage in my tested optimum situation is 22+ voltage with arround 100 miliamps.
So in optimum conditions you generate 1 amps per day for charging the battery. Needless to say this is in practical use for charging
batteries not enough. But to keep the amps for the battery up it does the job and thats what this panel intended to do.

Now if you buy 2 of these and use a dc dc converter you get lower voltage but higher amps if i am not mistaken. And then you perhaps
have enough power to drive a waterpump for a fountain in the garden. The misses wil be glad then also :)

Use this lightweight but durable panel on game cameras that use 6 volt batteries or on any 12 volt vehicle power sport battery. Charger automatically recognizes supply feed. Great for cell phones, computers, game cameras, flash lights or any deep cycle battery. This solar panel does very little charging on a large 12 Volt car battery, but will maintain it. It will help keep a battery from running down that is just sitting with no use. If you need a stronger solar charger you need to purchase our Model 2 or Model 3 Golf carts with several batteries work great with three Model 3 panels attached to the roof of the golf cart.Amorphous means it charges in cloudy conditions. Notice the accompanying pictures are taken in the shade and the blue charging light is on!Includes battery alligator clamps that clip to positive and negative battery poles or you can use the cigarette lighter plug in (power port adapter) Comes with suction cups in case you wish to place panel on a car/truck dash. Can extend a battery life by preventing slow cell death.Scientific Info: Through Photovoltaics or PV., the solar panel works through DC (direct current) The light photons knock electrons free in the structure forcing them through the external DC circuit, returning to the other side if the solar cell, then keeps repeating. Amorphous solar is better technology in cloudy weather because they contain no cells but through a deposition process.HHS offers several patented power sport and hunting golf cart accessories for sale on this site.Just type in Haynes Hunting Systems under the Automotive and the Sports and Outdoors category.
