(More customer reviews)I started bicycle commuting a few months ago, and use this light for dark mornings on the way into work. So far it works well. It is bright enough as long as you don't go to fast. You do get about 2 hours of light out of it, I put it on the charger everynight.

Blackburn System X8 Rechargeable Luxeon Bike Light System Review

(More customer reviews)After a week of using the Blackburn X8 for commuting 11.5 miles each way to/from work, I can honestly say that it is the brightest light system that I have used.Previously I was using a Light and Motion single lamp system which was great, but on darkened paths and roads, it was too focused and wouldn't project far enough ahead for the speed I wanted to ride.The Blackburn X8 dual system's spot lamp throws a nice bright light quite a bit farther up the road, and the flood lamp is great for illuminating the sides of the path/lane.I also like having the flashing feature on each lamp, because once I get into traffic I switch the flood to blinking to alert drivers.The system charges quickly and I can keep it plugged in without fear of overcharging. The switches are easy to use, and have a nice tactile click when pressed.

The design of the system leaves much to be desired, however. My first gripe is that I initially was intending to mount one lamp on my bars and one on my helmet, but that is not possible because of the cord design.And because only one helmet mount is supplied, the only way to use the two lamps at the same time is to mount them both close together on the bars. Not bad, but information available from retailers made me expect more flexibility when deciding where to mount the lamps.My second gripe is that if you mount the battery to the bike frame, you need to remove it in order to charge it.The charging receptacle inaccessible when it is frame mounted, and removing it and remounting it quickly became a pain in the butt.I finally resorted to putting the battery in a cut down water bottle and keeping it in the cage, but it would have been simple to make the charging receptacle accessible while still mounted to the frame. Thirdly, the design of the bar mounts cause inteference with the cable housing.I needed to remove the bar tape and reposition the housing so I could get the mounts positioned right.Finally, the overall cosmetics seems to be aimed at the younger, "armored gear" crowd with its fins, hoods and facets.I much prefer the simple elegant design of the L&M system.

Now that I have worked through the issues and am used to the quirks of the X8 system, I like it, and I am glad I made the switch.Performance is top shelf.However, I hope Blackburn considers a minor re-design of the battery pack and handlebar mounts to cure the issues that I described.Then perhaps the design would match the performance.

Pros:
1. Small (compared to other GPS watches)
2. Accurate (compared to military maps and GPS)
3. has MGRS
4. good quality charger/acessories/softwear
5. battery lasts a long time (w/o using GPS) before needing to be recharged

Cons:
1. because it's small, it has hard to use button combos
2. does not appear sturdy and it broke easily (but still works)
3. if I am moving at all, I can't get a fix.
4. Need a computer to take full advantage of features

I am very happy with the value of this purchase and I can't imagine I could get a better light without launching into the $300+ range.

Cateye EL-700RC Triple Shot Rechargeable LED Bicycle Headlight Review

This light uses old LED technology which make it shine only 130 lumen and the NiMH battery make it weigh over 800 grams (1.5 lbs) total.

Attaching to your bike:

The system it uses to attach to the frame is cumbersome and not very reliable. The size of the battery gets in the way of the water bottle.

The light mount quick release doesn't work well.

Vendor of this light and CatEye:

I didn't do enough research before purchasing it because CatEye doesn't use lumen in their advertising for obvious reasons. Their rating of 20000 candlepower is meaningless.

To return it, this vendor charges 20% restocking fee which is ridiculously high especially if you buy a high price item such as this.

How does it compare?

To compare its brightness I took it with me on a tour of specialized bike stores and REI and shined it along the lights in those stores (TriNewt, various cyglites). At REI all lights were brighter including a 90 dollars Cygolite with just one LED!

Trail Performance:

On the trail it performs OK and since your eyes are dark adapted, it shines just enough light to see the path ahead. Battery lasted 4 hours but it dimmed very noticeably after 3 hours.

Basic features missing on this light are flashing modes and low beam modes.

Battery and charging:

The battery charging system and the battery are designed poorly and the first charge is going to be very idiotic with indicator lights not showing anything appropriate. Subsequent charges seem to work OK but you have to watch it charge and unplug it when its done or the battery will be damaged as the charger is not a smart charger.

Final Thoughts:

What I really want is the Cygolite TridenX for only 60 dollars more but can't justify either taking a 30+ dollar loss on this light or buying another 230 dollar light.

UPDATE: I decided to mod this light with newer LEDs (~240 lumen max each - original about 80 at 1 Amp), a new driver (1 Amp with potentiometer so that I can change brightness), new reflector optics and now it's finally bright with a nice throw. It cost me around 65 dollars for the parts and now I have a 700 lumen light which is more than 3 times brighter than before and using about the same amount of power (slightly more if cranked up to 1 Amp).

Now that I know the inner workings of this light I have to say this:
- Engineering of the product is mediocre. Brittle bolts break when turned.
- Poor product support where upgrades should be easy and done at factory every year so that they don't advertise outdated products as new.
- Designing the product with an adjustable driver.
- Using AA NiMH battery cells is really cutting corners that don't need to be cut.

Currie Technologies iZIP Hybrid Via Mezza Electric Bicycle Review

(More customer reviews)While it was working, this bike got me around town more or less the way I needed. Then I started having problems with the chain locking up or falling off the gear. Just the other day, after only two months of use, the chain problem has effectively killed the bike. The chain locked so tight that it bent the rear axle and now it won't even move under the battery power.

When you have the battery charged and everything is working properly, it could be fun. You get where you need to without having to exert yourself too much, which is nice if you're not in the habit of changing in and out of riding gear. Again, when it worked, there were positive things about the bike. Ultimately, the experience has been negative.

Despite any of the companies claims, this is not a good option for a serious commuter. If you're in an area that's remotely bigger than a suburb, this bike will not cut it. I'm not in a big city by any means but apparently its too much for this bike to handle. Despite the fact that federal standards allow for electric bikes to go 20 miles per hour, they cap this bike at 15mph. You can pedal to gain speed, but the bike fights you. Honestly if the quality of the bike wasn't so tremendously awful I'd recommend it to serious cyclists as great resistance training. After about a week on this thing I was getting some serious leg muscles. In fact, I might have started peddling more than the bike could keep up with. Which brings me to another problem, no matter how hard you pedal, it doesn't give you enough of an edge in traffic. You'll pass by most cyclists on a full charge, which is good, but it's still hard work to get out of the way of cars.

For a while the motor was the saving grace of this bike. Because the pedal and chain aren't directly related to the motor, I'd have the ability to ride without peddling or at least keep riding until I could get to a safe spot to fix it. I figured even if it's not that great a bike, I'd just stop trying with the pedals and just use the motor power. Unfortunately, this idea came too late. The bike basically killed itself.

Bottom line, this is a cheap folding bike with an okay electric motor. It was overpriced even at Amazon prices. And for it to only last two months of basic commuting, is ridiculous. I'm looking through my information now to see what kind of warranty I might have, but I felt like I had to say something.

If you're thinking about getting this, give it a second thought. If you want this bike for the motor, a used gas scooter from a local dealer or craigslist won't cost too much more and is still a lot better than a car if you're concerned about being green. If you want this for the bike, just buy a regular bike, there a lot of good cheap bikes on Amazon.

The IZIP is just a mediocre product.

I use it for riding my mountain bike on the local trials at night and it is fantastic. You could pay alot more money for dual lights, longer ride times/battery life etc., but for my uncomplicated two-three hour night night rides I could not be more satisfied. For a fantastic light less 100.00 this is the light to buy.

(More customer reviews)The Garmin Forerunner 101 is exactly the same as the popular Forerunner 201, with a couple of small changes.Being the case, I won't review the actual product since everything that needs to be said about it's GPS features can be found in the reviews for the Forerunner 201.
The most notable difference with the 101 is that it uses 2 AAA batteries istead of being rechargeable like the 201. At first I thought this was a big detraction to buying it, but it's really not that bad.Battery life is decent, although not as high as with the 201, which gets up to 13 hours of use on a full charge. But if you're not a marathon runner and just run a few miles on your runs, this shouldn't matter much.The only hassle is having the batteries go dead during the middle of a run, which really sucks if you're into knowing exactly how far you've gone. You have to keep an eye on the battery life before going out. The batteries don't really effect the weigh or size of the product though.
The second major difference is that this unit does not interface with your PC.This also isn't too big of a problem because, currently, the Garmin software is really lacking.Hopefully they will improve on it with time, but the PC software is nowhere near as nice as it could be at this stage.You can view a graph of your altitude for your run, and graphs of your pace and speed, and that's about it.Otherwise the software is really crummy.You can't even zoom in on your map like you can with the actual unit.
If you're serious about running, I would highly suggest the Forerunner 201 over this product, mainly because the price difference is so negligible.You can find the 201 for only about $20 more than this model, and the extra money is well worth the rechargeability of the 201 and freedom from the batteries.But if you really can't afford the cost, you're not going to be hurting too much with the 101.

(More customer reviews)I have been researching this watch since the X9i(first model) .I guess I expected too much.The first watch that I had was sent back because the barometer went out as well as the face steaming up.All I exposed it to was a car wash and normal shower.Not what I expected for $400+ watch.Sent it back and got another one.Within a week the coating used on the black part of face is flaking off.I looked at every review and still ordered the watch.I love the look of the watch and make no mistake it is very cool.I wanted it to wear everyday because of the large face and it looks cool.I would just like to caution everyone else.It is not very durable, and this was a lot of money for me.I really thought because of the high price and the rugged look, I would not have to worry about it.That is not the case.I find myself constantly checking it after it gets wet to make sure it is not fogged up.I like the watch it just lacks some durability issues for everyday wear. If you are a gadget guy or girl you will like the watch, just be aware that it is not a timex and does not handle be bumped and beat around very well.I also forsee some issues with the seals, they do not fit well.If you are even remotely hard on watches, I would not purchase this watch if you are looking for an everyday watch.Hope this helps someone else.

This is my second posting and I am on my 3rd X10mi.Like I have said before this watch is way cool, but lacks some real work. My 1st watch fogged up, my second one fell apart and the third one is being sent back in the morning, because the bezel keeps popping off.If you buy it from an authorized dealer you can keep sending them back (at least for 2 years) but what happens after that?Do not buy this watch.I went through these reviews and saw the same type of reviews as the one I am typing. I over looked them because I loved the watch and thought that won't happen to me they must have got a bad one or they are just picky.Trust me I am just an average Joe and this thing breaks like crazy!Beware!

Suunto was founded in 1936 by outdoors man and a keen orienteering enthusiast, Tuomas Vohlonen, who had long been bothered by a problem: the inaccuracy of traditional dry compasses and their lack of steady needle operation. Garmin Dakota 20 Waterproof Hiking GPS Review

(More customer reviews)After losing a Garmin etrex vista hCX which I loved, I decided to go with the Dakota 20 (D20).I will be comparing the two in the review.

Maps and Storage:

The D20 comes loaded with a basemap, which has most major highways, but no streets.So for your purpose, you can choose City Navigator (required for auto navigation to work), or Topo 2008 (shows mountain countours & most lakes).Luckily, I had both Topo and City Nav on my computer.

Since the D20 comes with 850mb of internal memory, it's enough for self selected regions in Topo 2008 and/or Inland Lakes map, but not for City Nav.I put in a 4gb microSDHC card, which handled the 1.2gb .IMG file of the city navigator map.What might trouble some is that the D20 does not come with Mapsource(a great program for making custom maps, and upload trails and routes) or any kind of software.The hCX comes bundled with Mapsource. Although if you purchase the City Navigator, it comes with Mapsource.

When combining multiple maps onto the device, the D20 is much more convenient as you simply add the .IMG files (must have different file names) into the Garmin folder.D20 will automatically detect the maps and enable them.In the hCX, you had to merge all of the .IMG files into one or use seperate microSD cards, which was a toll. The D20 stores the saved tracks individually as .GPX files, whereas the hcx clumps all the trails into one file(named by date).

Auto Navigation:

I didn't find much info about Auto Navigation for the D20 before purchased, so I wasn't sure what to expect. After trying it a few times, it's definitely a step up from the hCX.There's an Automobile mode for navigation, where the map is tilted so you can see the turn coming from farther ahead.The directions text is noticeably smaller on the D20, which might be hard for some to read, but luckily you can adjust the text size of the directions.You can also customize what information you want to see (i.e-distance to destination, odometer, etc.). The D20 gives almost the same beep as the hCX when turns are approaching(no voice of course). The D20 navigation overall is more pleasing to the eye.

Battery Life:

The hCX wins on battery life 25 hrs vs 20 hours on the D20.There is a battery save mode on the D20 that definitely improves battery life.How it works is the screen will turn off in about 15 idle seconds to save power, and you simply touch the screen to see again. On D20's regular battery mode, I noticed the battery drains very quickly -definitely less than 20 hours.Recharcheable NiMH AA batteries are a must since you'll be going through them quickly.I use Sanyo Eneloop and Rayovac Hybrid.Be sure to change the Battery type under Setup>System to get the correct battery meter.

Visibility:

This has been the biggest complain by some, but I found the visibility/brightness on the D20 to be suitable for most types of lighting, including in the sun and in the dark.You can adjust the backlight (although brighter means less battery life).I'll admit it can be harder to see in certain angles of sunlight, but this hasn't been a problem during auto nav or regular use.The hCX is slightly brighter, but it's not a significant difference.

Accuracy:

During initial use, the satelites weren't detected on the D20.I had to walk outside before the Satelites could lock on. The D20 has three modes for Satellite: Normal, WAAS, and Demo.I've had the most accurate luck with WAAS as i'm assuming it's using the new satelite technology.On the D20 i've gotten accuracy as close as 10 ft, whereas on the hCX 20ft was usually the closest it would ever get.In general though, the satelite signal on the D20 is about the same as the hCX.

GPS Interface:

This is where the D20 far outshines the hCX.You navigate through all of the menus by touch.This is such a relief from using hCX's mini joystick and side buttons.What's nice about the D20 is you can move the map around by sliding your finger on it, whereas on the hCX joystick you have to sluggishly go at an angle.The D20 works much faster in operation. For example, it refreshes the maps considerably faster than the hCX.This equals less headaches when trying to pinpoint a location.

The layout on the D20 is very straight forward.The main menu contains all of the icons (Map, Where to, Track Manager, Setup, etc.) and you can scroll through all of the features by the arrows on the bottom corners. The hCX has a higher learning curve as you have to manipulate multiple buttons to get somewhere.

GPS Use:

I use the D20 for fitness activities: kayaking, jogging, cycling, and hiking. I can easily plot my map with distance and tracks(breadcrumb trails) onto websites that map .GPX files(Mapmyfitness, Motionbased).I use it too, of course, for auto navigation.The hCX is capable of doing all these things as well, but its not nearly as modern and simple as the D20.Resetting the track took me a few minutes to figure out, but it's simply Setup>Reset>Reset Trip Data.You have to use this command right before you go jogging, biking, rowing, etc. -otherwise your new track will mix in with the prior/current track. It'd be nice to have shortcuts on the D20, but no biggie.

Profiles and Customizing:

A nice feature on the D20 is the ability to create profiles.I have a profile for driving, and one for exercising.It keeps the settings and maps you want selected automatically saved into the profile (i.e- City Nav for auto, Topo for exercising).You can also rearrange or get rid of buttons in the main menu, specifically for each profile.This is extremely useful in having all the features you need in one or two screens.With the hCX, you can customize the features, although it is not nearly as simple to rearrange as the D20. The hCX does not have profiles.

Overall:

While it was quite unfortunate I dropped the hCX in the lake, the D20 has proven to be a suitable upgrade and replacement.The D20 and hCX both have their strengths and weaknesses, but i'm definitely enjoying the experience of the user friendly D20.I have yet to determine it's true ruggedness, but will post updates if anything else should be mentioned.

I do a lot of night riding and even after a 1 1/2 months the battery is still not dead (chase mode, at least 15 hours). It's super bright but i only use it as supplementary to a more comprehensive light system (Cygolite 350 mitycross on front, mars 3.0 on seatpost, cateye on the rear rack point on my road bike. This is typically combined with reflective gear when I'm doing serious riding. I'd much rather not get hit by a car again and a lack of visibility will be no excuse if I do.) I'm also going to add the front flea soon to the front of my helmet and possibly one for the handlebars of my commuter bike).

However, I would invest your money in the usb charging version. I haven't had to use the battery charging system yet but it seems like a hassle.

- Took +4 months for the battery to finally wear down. And I was wrong about the battery charging system, its wicked simple and easy; is excellent in case I go on any ultra-long bike journeys.

I read many negative reviews about the bracket, however my main issue lies with the extremely cheap and flimsy plastic casing. I have never dropped the light (though I believe a light costing approximately 100 bucks should hold up against a 3-4 foot fall without any issues), but the the casing cracked in my backpack. I always try to be careful with my backpack for I keep my sunglasses, graphing calculator, cell phone, and mp3 player in the bag, and they have not sustained any damage. The battery takes a long time to recharge, and its an all around bad buy. I would not recommend this light to anyone.

(More customer reviews)Assembly: I've never assembled a bicycle before, but some assembly is required for the e-zip.I managed to put it together in about 3-4 hours, and someone with experience could probably do it in 1-2 hours.Some parts of the instructions aren't terribly clear, but not too much assembly is necessary.The electric components are already installed, so it's just a matter of putting together the handlebars, front wheel and brakes, and seat.

Range: The claim is that this bike has a range of 18-24 miles, but I don't think this is accurate.My bike will go about 13 miles before the engine appears to run out of energy.The battery indicator says that there's still almost half the energy left in the battery at that point, as there should be, but it acts as though it's run out of juice.

Fortunately my bike commute is just 13 miles, so I can manage with the reduced range.A couple of times when I haven't put as much effort into pedalling, it's run out of juice on me after just about 10 miles, and it's a tough bike to pedal without the electric motor going as it's so heavy.As long as I put some decent effort into pedalling and go a little easy on the throttle, it will get me the 13 miles.You actually don't want to go much further than that anyway, because sealed lead acid battery life is significantly reduced when the battery is discharged more than 80%.

Performance: On my regular mountain/road hybrid bike, my commute takes about an hour, averaging about 13 mph.On this electric bike, the commute takes about 50 minutes averaging about 15 mph.The ride takes significantly less energy, as the throttle makes pedalling much easier.Accelerating and climbing hills (and going against a headwind) in particular are a piece of cake in comparison.

The bike has 7 gears, but I only use about 4, if that many.Most of my ride is spent in the lowest gear going at about 17 mph.If I'm climbing a hill I'll probably drop it down a gear or two until I reach the top.As I mentioned, the motor is engaged with a throttle on the right handlebar, below which is a battery level indicator (full/half/empty).The battery attaches into a slot on either side of the rack on the back of the bike (only 1 battery is provided and necessary).The bike is pretty heavy (50-60 pounds), especially with the heavy lead battery on board.The charger is included and the battery is removable, so you can take it off and bring it with you for recharging.

Battery: Recharging usually takes me 4 hours.The charger claims it takes 6-8 hours, but that's probably if the battery is fully discharged (and you don't want it to be, as that will reduce the battery lifetime, as mentioned).It costs about 0.2 cents per mile (2 cents per ten miles) to recharge the battery, so it's practically free.The battery should last 150-300 charges, and costs about $100 to replace.You also want to recharge it immediately after use to maximize the lifetime of the battery.When I get to work I bring the charger and battery inside and recharge it at my desk, and do the same at home.

The only complaints I have are that I wish the range were a little better and the bike were a bit lighter.A few of the parts are a bit on the cheap side (like the seat), but easily replaceable with better parts if you're so inclined.For $350 I really can't complain.An electric bike conversion kit on its own will cost close to $300, and a regular mountain bike on its own will cost on the order of $400, so $350 for a combination of the two is great.I didn't find any other electric bikes for under $500, so this bike is a great value as long as you don't need to go more than 13 miles at a time.

(More customer reviews)I bought two of these bikes for commuting...and two extra chargers to keep at each of my offices, so that way I can charge for the ride home.The second battery is very expensive, but the second charger is not.I had a flat tire from letting the tire go too low and then taking a curve...the bike shop called it a "slider" flat...otherwise, I ride long distances and don't have trouble.It needs to have rack accessories, inlcuding panniers, that you can actually get...they don't seem to sell them even though they have pictures.You will experience the motor cut out the other reviewer talked about if you "ride the brake"...as long as you let go of the brake before you engage the throttle, that doesn't happen.These bikes are so zippy they are a blast!My biggest problem has been with the brakes...they do seem to need adjustment often, and new pads.I try not to use the brakes, but let's face it, the disks are tiny and the bike weighs 75 pounds.Still, the world would be a better place if everyone rode these bikes.I also own several Segways and an electric boat (DUFFY), so I like electric stuff.As with all the other electric things, it is best to keep charged...the lower half of "the tank" always seems to go faster than the 1st half...so you may have to pedal if you run out...and if you do, it will probably be on a hill!But the good news is that you CAN pedal...and it's good for you.Great product.And I'm sure it will get better.

Planet Bike Alias HID Bicycle Light Set with Integrated Battery Review

(More customer reviews)This headlight fit my requirements perfectly. Since everything is contained in one relatively small sleek package, removing and installing is quick and easy. I at first worried that the mount would not be robust enough to keep the light from moving when going over bumps. No more worries - it has held its position going 30+ MPH over fairly rough asphalt. I ride a road bike so cannot comment on how well it would do off road.
Light output is excellent. It is probably about 30% brighter than my 15W halogen and has a wide coverage. I have to ride down an unlit road in pitch darkness on my morninig commute dodging potholes and the edge of the road. I reach speeds of just over 30 MPH and this light provides the luminence necessary to avoid those obstacles.
The 2.5 to 3 hours of burn time for this light is somewhat limited compared to others, but for me is perfect. I would rather have this capacity and the resulting compact size than to have a large capacity with the probable external battery. The unit uses a Li-Ion battery which is much better than either NiCad or NiMh in terms of capacity per unit size and weight, charge time, and any memory effects.
Workmanship is impeccable. This thing could be put in a museum. It looks and feels like a high quality instrument. The soft case that it comes in is very handy too.
My only complaint about this light would probably be with the mount. Although it is pretty easy to use and holds the light very well, once you get it adjusted to your handlebar it is easy to lose the adjustment once you take it off. Also, the adjustment resolution is a little coarse with one turn of the adjustment screw the minimum you can adjust. Not a big problem but I had to find something to complain about. You could avoid this by leaving the mount on the bike and just unclipping the light from the mount.
