The effective battery life in my flashlight is less than 10 minutes after a 24 hour charge. I took a chance on these batteries because they were cheap, but you get what you pay for, it seems, so I can't be too upset. Next time I would/will spend a little more to get quality batteries that have better utility and are reliable.

Solio Mono-A Hybrid Solar Charger Review

Solio Mono-A Hybrid Solar Charger
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received my Solio Mono as a promotion from my local public radio station. My box came with everything listed here, but is bright red instead of black.(My carabiner is dark metallic blue, if you care.)The device is lightweight but I'm worried that the solar collector would get scratched up if I were to attach it to the outside of a backpack or something.

The micro-USB tip attaches directly to my phone, and I use the USB female tip to charge my iPod Touch via its USB cable. You can use it to charge anything that has a USB charging cable, so that's really handy. My AC adapter came with interchangeable prongs for the USA, Australia/NZ, UK/Europe, and those round prongs possibly used in Asia, which is really neat.I have a trip to NZ planned, and I'll take the Solio instead of my devices' respective charging paraphernalia. While this means I can charge only one device at a time, I can charge one device overnight while the device is plugged in (and charging itself too), then charge the other device during the day while it and the Solio are stowed in my backpack!

Note: you can't charge a laptop or any heavy power usage items with the Solio. It's designed for "personal electronics" like cellphones and MP3 players. It will work with digital cameras that can charge via USB, they say on their website.

The thing that loses Solio points is solar charging.I've owned it for 4 days and it charges very slowly using just the sun.I've had it outdoors on my sunny porch for a couple of days and it's only gotten one "tick" of charge. Now, I live in the Northeast US, and that spot gets direct sunlight only in the afternoon. Both days have been partially cloudy, but this seems sad.At this point I'm ready to ask for some sort of protective cover for the solar cell and just use it as a charger/spare battery!Solio claims it takes 20 hours to get a full charge, but unless you're under ideal conditions it's going to take much longer. So can't recommend that anyone count on it for seriously charging a device using only the sun.If that's your need, you should go for Solio Universal Hybrid Solar Charger, which is heavier but has 3 collectors instead of just 1.

So I like it as a travel charger and emergency battery.I don't think you can expect to reduce your energy use and count on getting any significant charging from the sun, unless you live in a sunnier clime and can keep it in stronger sunlight more of the day.You might get enough charge for an emergency call, or to keep a device topped off, so it's better than not having a solar collector, I guess. But if you have multiple devices that you travel with, and you'd like to have some spare charge and not carry all those different charge plugs, then this might be useful for you.

Brunton New SOLARIS i6 Foldable iPod? Solar Charger Review

Brunton New SOLARIS i6 Foldable iPod? Solar Charger
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, I live in Sacramento, CA.So it's not the sunniest location, but still pretty dang sunny.

I purchased the Solaris i6 with the intention to be able to charge any of the following: Ipod Video, Ipod Shuffle, Treo Smartphone, Garmin GPS, Bluetooth headset, & AA or AAA batteries.Usage would be mainly around the house, but I am an outdoor enthusiast that would disappear into backcountry whenever possible taking my trusty Ipod as my only real tie to civilization. Therefore, portability, simplicity & durability would be paramount for my outings.

At first tests, the Solaris was TECHNICALLY capable of charging everything EXCEPT the Ipod Video. The shuffle, phone, GPS & Bluetooth were fabulous - no problems there. The AA & AAA batteries were close to impossible.Majority of chargers out there are just not able to work with the current that's created from these panels.I did find a charger that could, however the limit was a single battery at a time!If 2 batteries were placed in the charger, the lights would flicker a little -- but charge. The SECOND a cloud, haze, or anything (possibly even a ladybug!) passed over the sun, the threshold was broken & the battery charger would flash "error."Unfortunately, the charger would either sit there flashing error (& no longer charging) until I came back later thinking my batteries are charged, or I would have to reset the charger by either removing the batteries & re-inserting (or unplugging & re-plugging the charger to the solar panels).So... technically, there probably is a charger out there that can work off of the current that the i6 produces, but in my experience -- I'm as close to finding that charger as I am to finding a cure for Mad Cow Disease. So, expect the stated "3-4 hrs to charge 4 AA batteries" to actually read, "3-4 hrs PER AA battery."As for the Ipod... IMPOSSIBLE as well using the provided Ipod cable.I figured I had a defective Ipod cable -- as the terminal contacts were too small for me to test with my voltage meter.Concluding so, I exchanged the Solaris for another one hoping that the Ipod issue would be resolved.Well, the problem was not resolved.

I can only conclude 1 of 2 conclusions, either: 1) I have terrible luck, & got 2 units with defective cables, or 2) the i6 is not capable of creating enough juice to charge the Ipod Video (at least in my 95 degrees, full-sun early September conditions here in Northern CA).I'm assuming scenario #2.That said, I think it's terrible to tout a product specifically for the Ipod -- yet it can't deliver. As a manufacturer, I'd have tested the product against available generations of Ipods that use the connection that you are providing. There is no disclaimer (except that the lighting conditions may vary from our test type deal, etc.), so it really is disappointing. If you have a USB car adapter however, you can use this with the normal Ipod USB cable & the Brunton provided Female Cig adapter. This WILL charge the Ipod -- but you now have to use 3 items vs. the 1 Brunton Ipod cable. For some this may be insignificant, but for me -- this feels a little jacked-up when you consider the Ipod cable is about $10... which means some of my purchase price is completely wasted. Not to mention the fact that I now have to carry more bulk when outdoors.

So bottom-line, this product is capable of charging an Ipod -- as well as a good majority of SMALL electronics.UN-intentional deception aside, I like the Solaris for what it is capable of delivering in such a portable package.I will however grade them hard, as I believe in delivering on a promise or claim.

On a side note, I am impressed with the Solaris line to the point that I am currently contemplating purchasing the 26 as well for larger electronics (digital SLR batteries & portable DVD players), for longer comfortable basecamps away from power.

One last point to consider... if you are purchasing these units SOLELY for emergency power (cell phones), you might want to consider the 12 or 26 watt Solaris instead. The 6 watts work beautifully under sunny conditions, & at about 25%-50% under light to moderate overcast conditions (but still enough to activate my phone charger).I would doubt though that enough current would be produced under heavier overcast (conditions typically associated with emergency situations) to initiate charging for most cell phones. For those of you thinking, "it's for situations like car trouble on a sunny day (not natural disasters)," let's face it, why would you need something as expensive as solar?... why not go with something like an extra battery... easier & cheaper to buy & carry. With a larger Solaris, there is a greater chance that the panels will collect enough energy to trigger your chargers, as a 10-15% output from the 26 would be most likely enough to activate charging.Just something to think about...

DieHard 71222 Fully-Automatic Battery Charger / Engine Starter for 12- Review

DieHard 71222 Fully-Automatic Battery Charger / Engine Starter for 12-
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is listed as a "fully automatic" car battery charger, which means that if you select a charge amperage it's supposed to automatically maintain that charge amperage.

However, "fully automatic" does NOT mean this is a Battery Maintainer. This does NOT have Float-Mode Monitoring. You cannot just connect this to your car battery and forget it because if you do, pretty soon this will completely destroy your battery.

If you do not disconnect this charger after your battery is fully-charged, it will overcharge your car battery which will reduce it's capacity and eventually ruin it permanently. You need to read the manual carefully to figure this out and you need to connect a separate battery meter to determine if the battery is fully charged.

You can safely ignore the meter on the front because it's useless. With a fully dead battery, the meter will show as fully charged.

This is O.K. for a brute-force charging but the phrase "fully automatic" in the title is very deceptive. There are much better car battery chargers out there for less money that will keep your battery healthy.

36 Volt Golf Cart Battery Charger for EZ-GO Powerwise Review

36 Volt Golf Cart Battery Charger for EZ-GO Powerwise
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
UPDATE ON 2/18/2010: I went down to my garage this morning and there was a strange smell. I also heard the fan of this SCHAUER running, which it should not have been doing after a night of charging. When I went to the golf cart, the seat was very warm. As I lifted the seat to look at the battery, I saw all of them bubbling. I am not sure why it overcharged the batteries but I now use this as a back-up.

My original review:

I hate when ads use a name in the description that has nothing to do with a product. In this case, the title says "for EZ-GO Powerwise". This is just to get the attention of anyone who is looking to replace their Powerwise battery charger. This is a schauer. It is a generic charger and they provide a Powerwise plug adapter.

Why is it important? Well, the Powerwise is a 50 AMP charger while this is only a 20 AMP charger. So, the Powerwise charges much faster than this knock-off. Also, this is a digital charger while the Powerwise is not. This charger does not provide you any information on how much recharging is needed while the Powerwise has a meter that tells shows you how many amps the battery is taking. With the Powerwise, I can estimate how much time I can use a golf cart if I interrupt the charging process. With the schauer, I have no idea.

OK, now that I have done my ragging, I do have some positives. Despite this being inferior, it actually works. If you charge overnight, the extra time this takes to charge is meaningless, but the fact that it only uses 20 AMPS will help the battery life and allow it to plug into a busy socket. Hopefully, this won't break down, but so far it has worked fine.

Also, this battery charger is much lighter than a Powerwise so it is easy to carry and cheaper to ship.

So, back to ragging. This company does not ship to Hawaii or Alaska. Since I live in Hawaii, I had to get it shipped to a friend in California and they shipped it to me. This added time to the already slow delivery (regular group shipping by them). They can easily solve the problem by just shipping it to Hawaii and charge UPS or USPS prices, but they don't bother.

Minn Kota MK 210 On-Board Charger (2 Banks, 5 Amps per Bank) Review

Minn Kota MK 210 On-Board Charger
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had the MK 210 installed for one month now and it has done great so far. This is my first onboard charger and it is a huge convenience. It also does a better job than my previous charger (Shumacher Ship 'N Shore 15/10/2 Amp) of getting the batteries to a truly full charge (13.1V). I think this must be due to the MK's three phase charging scheme. I love that I can leave it plugged in and let it go into "maintenance" mode after the batteries are fully charged.

I'm using it to charge four deep-cycle marine batteries. I have two battery banks, each with a battery switch (BEP Mini Battery Selectors). I hooked the positive terminals from the MK to the battery switches so I can do a targeted charge of 2 depleted batteries at once or just charge all 4 at the same time. :)

Associated Equipment 6006 6/12/24 Volt Battery Charger Review

Associated Equipment 6006 6/12/24 Volt Battery Charger
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this charger because of its versatility and durability (Heavy Duty).

It is a great charger except for one deplorable thing! It has heavy plastic insulation on the cables and electrical cord! They are so stiff you would think it was crap from China, and that's just at 50 degrees F.I have no idea how much more contemptable they'll be when the weather REALLY gets COLD, when a person generally most often needs a charger. So if you want flexible cables get one with rubber insulation.......yeh right, like anyone nowadays bothers to tell you that or even mention the type of insulation. If it gives me problems at 25 degrees below F., I will probably swap them out with #3 or #4 welding cable, and if I do, they will will be 3 feet longer, to reach high up on my old tractors.
Had this charger the aforementioned excellent cable insulation, I would readily give it 5 Stars. This charger does not have all the bells and whistles, to go haywire, plain, simple, durable, and will hopefully last 20 plus years easily, as long as no dummy goes and touches/sparks the charging clamps together! (Knocks the sap out of and dramatically shortenes the life of the rectifier(s).
I hope someone at Associated reads and fixes this, until they do I will have to recommend Century brand made in Minnesota....it gets cold there, they know. One would want to make sure about the cable insulation first, though.
My Matco (made by them) lasted 28 years, with only 2 recifier replacements, now not to be had) Don't get me wrong, Associated is good American built product, it is just a shame they cut a corner. lssmonikeratyahoodotcom

Brunton SolarFlat Rigid Solor Panel Review

Brunton SolarFlat Rigid Solor Panel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Seems well constructed.Has an aluminum frame as mentioned in the description. My only suggestion to make it truly weather proof would be a slightly better seal on the rear terminal block housing.I may silicon it or do something to better seal it for the environment I will be using it in.I considered sealing around the frame but this would seem redundant. The frame appears to just provide physical as opposed to environment protection for the panel. The panel itself seems to be sealed by virtue of how it is constructed.

It also comes with a nice selection of adapters(Cigarette Lighter, Alligator clamps, bare ended pigtail), and an LED adapter plug to check function.I will be using it to trickle charge a battery in a 16KW Backup Generator at a vacation property. The battery is normally charged by the supplied power but only when in Auto Mode.I turn the unit off typically when not occupying the home and therefore the battery runs down.

BatteryMINDer 12 Volt 2/4/8 Amp Wet/Gel/AGM Battery Charger Review

BatteryMINDer 12 Volt 2/4/8 Amp Wet/Gel/AGM Battery Charger
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have several lead-acid batteries that I need to keep charged up; I heard about desulphating chargers, then found this one. I first used it on a 5-year-old car battery whose voltage indicated that it was at about 40% capacity. After following the directions (about 6 days of desulphating), the voltage jumped up to a point that indicated that the battery was now at 90%.

I have a friend who had been trickle charging his older car battery and felt that he had gotten it as fully charged as he could, but then I loaned him this charger and a week later got a phone message from him indicating surprise at how much his battery had improved. He was convinced! It's very possible to double a battery's life with this charger, and so it can pay for itself quickly.

The problems with this charger are the complexity and the poor documentation.I think you can see the all the lights and buttons on the front of it - somewhat bewildering to most.So you have to spend a lot of time reading the manual at first, and, I think, it could take a lot less time if they could find a competent technical writer. They KNOW their manual has problems because they added a supplement that says to ignore all the instructions in the manual and just read that one page supplement! The trouble is, even that supplement is a bit hard to understand. One example is how batteries are to treated as large, medium, or small, but they really don't tell you how to classify them. I had assumed a battery for a compact car would be considered medium, but a phone call to their support guy informed me that it was actually large. The manual just assumes that we can read their minds on things like this, but we can't, so we get confused and use the charger improperly.

I had an H1000 by the same company in the past and loved it until I lost it
during a camping trip. The only problem was that the H1000 did not have an
adapter for my iPhone.I tried purchasing another H1000, but realized that
it had been replaced by this new Rocsta. The funky yellow color is awesome
(it will hopefully help me from loosing this one, lol), it seems to charge a
bit more quickly then before (full day of sun charges it completely), and it
came with a tip for my iPhone 4 right in the box!Another cool thing is
that it also came with a light adapter tip. It's a cool little flashlight
that comes in handy while poking around in the tent and such. All in all,
I'm very happy with this solar charger.

9.6V 2000mAh Nunchuck NiMH Battery Packs for Airsoft Gun Review

9.6V 2000mAh Nunchuck NiMH Battery Packs for Airsoft Gun
Average Reviews:

To a total of $22 for 9.6v 2000mAh mini nunchuck style batteries, it's an incredibly good deal compared to the premium Intellect batteries that will run you $35 and/or more. The company that makes these batteries here are by Tenergy and are great batteries.I was afraid it was going to come DOA but it was fully charged, it totally surprised me.These batteries are great and a better deal than local surplus stores nearby.5 stars for these batteries and I highly recommend these to anyone looking for a mini battery and faster ROF for the AEG.
