Stanley HID0109 HID Spotlight Review

It takes a lot to completely please me with most products, but this one has done it. It is WAY WAY WAY Bright! Much brighter than my HID suv headlights. The manual does not go into enough depth on a few items, but a quick phone call to Technical Services answered all my questions. The Technician was VERY courteous and intelligent It also comes with a power cable (Well built) that can be plugged into a cigarette lighter in a vehicle. This bypasses the internal SLA battery and powers the light 100% by the vehicle. I think the price is appropriate considering the super unit that it is.

DXG DXG-608 6.0 MegaPixel Camera with 3x Optical Zoom and 2" LCD Review

DXG DXG-608 6.0 MegaPixel Camera with 3x Optical Zoom and 2' LCD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Be warned, I'm a bit bitter and vexed with this product, see cons for details, and this is only based on my experience with the camera...but for the short part: I'd reccommend against this camera, most likely.

(p.s. lemme know if you can, if you find a typo, I'd hate let one I didn't find sit)

So, here's the long story:
What I found to be PRO'S with this camera: it takes digital pictures, they're ok looking, it's not really heavy, I like the twisty wheel thingy on top to change from different picture/movie/download-to-computer/whatever modes, you can turn off the viewfinder so it saves battery (a bit anyway, and it REALLY needs it), it has MACRO mode (yea!), and oh yeah, it was free 'cause it was a gift.I think I'd be dissapointed if I paid money for it, because of the cons...

CONS:the pictures are not "crystal" or "sparkling" or whatever clear they call them. They're ok, maybe good, but my HP took about the same with 1 less MP, but alas, the HP got lost...
It takes a while to turn on.
It seems to take forever to take pictures some times
The flash selector automatically gets shut off if you switch to macro-but doeesn't get set back to whatever you had when you went to macro. This means that you have to cycle through all the flash settings again, which means the camera then has to take 3 or 4 seconds to think about what you just told it, and then it gets itself ready again
AND HERE'S THE BIG ONE:Search as I might, I can't seem to find a spare battery for this thing.Maybe I'll find one, one day.Maybe not.[[UDATED a few days later: so, I finally found a battery today (after 9 months of looking) which is servicable in this function, by a 3rd party.I found it at Frys, and I only found it because we're visiting Chicago... they're not a chain they have in most places I've ever been. It's the LENMAR DLC1LH.I charged it in the camera's battery charger dock, and that didn't blow up.The camera turned on and off without blowing up, so I think (fingers crossed!) it might work.Still not too happy with the company or camera...anyway, back to the old story]]The camera takes what I believe is a propriatary battery, some rectangular NBL1 model. Not standard AA or AAA's...Granted, it's rechargable, and takes less than 2 hours usually (but the recharger dock is finicky on how you slip the battery in-you may "think" you're charging...and find out the next morning when you head to the park that you didn't).And unlike the standard AA or AAA's mentioned above, you can't just go to the store when you say, well, this time I"ll just buy the non-rechargable, because I need to use the camera, and I"ll recharge the battery later. No, you say: "Arg! The battery's dead.No pictures for me!"And since, when fully charged, the battery lasts around 3-4 hours, if you turn off the LCD screen and turn it off when you're not taking pictures every several minutes (less if you just keep using it), this will not last you even one day.Barely a morning, and by the afternoon at the zoo, you can only look at the animals and remember.Or, try to memorize what your 9 year old daughter looked like while she was perched on that bronze gorilla, etc.

Also, if for some reason the battery dies while the camera is on (e.g. because you've got the LCD screen off, and thus can't see the battery status icon, which is hard to decipher anyway), the camera will now be stuck in the OPEN position, with the little lense tube thing stuck in the OUT position. Therefore, it no longer fits into it's protective case.
If the universe decides to really ruin your day, and it runs out while you're taking a video, as it did to me, and it's actually trying to write data to the SD memory card, you're totally screwed. Not only is the camera stuck in the open position, but: 1. it was then impossible to delete the photos taken before it died off of the memory card (they mostly did transfer to the computer at least).2. that particular movie clip and one taken just before it were scrambled such that they not only couldn't play, but they crashed/froze/partially froze both my computer, and my husband's when he tried his.3.The memory card refused to be formatted, via the camera, or several computers.4.The memory card no longer let you take pictures on it.So, 5.You need a new memory card. Joy.

The camera some times gets weird glitches where it will shadow a previous picture onto the following pictures, or go all funny with weird distorded odd colored bars horizontally over the screen, which transfer to the picture. This can look cool, but it can also ruin an important picture...

The DXG company website seems to forgot it made this and probably other older cameras, and doesn't seem to sell spare batteries of any sort, so I don't know where you'd find one, except maybe used somewhere (Updated: Found one, at last, at Frys, see above update).

Anyway, to wrap things up, consider long and hard before you buy this.If you can find an extra battery before you buy, or aren't going to use it that often/long, maybe it will work out.Otherwise, you may be better off with something with similar features, but with AA or AAA or other readily available batteries. (update: I'd still rather have the AA or AAA or something universally available at, say, a gas station! than this thing, if these crap out, I've gotta find another Frys or go online, and wait for shipping...) Good luck, whatever you choose!

Garmin Dakota 20 Waterproof Hiking GPS Review

Garmin Dakota 20 Waterproof Hiking GPS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After losing a Garmin etrex vista hCX which I loved, I decided to go with the Dakota 20 (D20).I will be comparing the two in the review.

Maps and Storage:

The D20 comes loaded with a basemap, which has most major highways, but no streets. So for your purpose, you can choose City Navigator (required for auto navigation to work), or Topo 2008 (shows mountain countours & most lakes).Luckily, I had both Topo and City Nav on my computer.

Since the D20 comes with 850mb of internal memory, it's enough for self selected regions in Topo 2008 and/or Inland Lakes map, but not for City Nav.I put in a 4gb microSDHC card, which handled the 1.2gb .IMG file of the city navigator map. What might trouble some is that the D20 does not come with Mapsource(a great program for making custom maps, and upload trails and routes) or any kind of software. The hCX comes bundled with Mapsource. Although if you purchase the City Navigator, it comes with Mapsource.

When combining multiple maps onto the device, the D20 is much more convenient as you simply add the .IMG files (must have different file names) into the Garmin folder.D20 will automatically detect the maps and enable them.In the hCX, you had to merge all of the .IMG files into one or use seperate microSD cards, which was a toll. The D20 stores the saved tracks individually as .GPX files, whereas the hcx clumps all the trails into one file(named by date).

Auto Navigation:

I didn't find much info about Auto Navigation for the D20 before purchased, so I wasn't sure what to expect. After trying it a few times, it's definitely a step up from the hCX.There's an Automobile mode for navigation, where the map is tilted so you can see the turn coming from farther ahead. The directions text is noticeably smaller on the D20, which might be hard for some to read, but luckily you can adjust the text size of the directions. You can also customize what information you want to see (i.e-distance to destination, odometer, etc.). The D20 gives almost the same beep as the hCX when turns are approaching(no voice of course). The D20 navigation overall is more pleasing to the eye.

Battery Life:

The hCX wins on battery life 25 hrs vs 20 hours on the D20.There is a battery save mode on the D20 that definitely improves battery life. How it works is the screen will turn off in about 15 idle seconds to save power, and you simply touch the screen to see again. On D20's regular battery mode, I noticed the battery drains very quickly -definitely less than 20 hours.Recharcheable NiMH AA batteries are a must since you'll be going through them quickly.I use Sanyo Eneloop and Rayovac Hybrid.Be sure to change the Battery type under Setup>System to get the correct battery meter.

Visibility:

This has been the biggest complain by some, but I found the visibility/brightness on the D20 to be suitable for most types of lighting, including in the sun and in the dark. You can adjust the backlight (although brighter means less battery life).I'll admit it can be harder to see in certain angles of sunlight, but this hasn't been a problem during auto nav or regular use.The hCX is slightly brighter, but it's not a significant difference.

Accuracy:

During initial use, the satelites weren't detected on the D20.I had to walk outside before the Satelites could lock on. The D20 has three modes for Satellite: Normal, WAAS, and Demo.I've had the most accurate luck with WAAS as i'm assuming it's using the new satelite technology. On the D20 i've gotten accuracy as close as 10 ft, whereas on the hCX 20ft was usually the closest it would ever get.In general though, the satelite signal on the D20 is about the same as the hCX.

GPS Interface:

This is where the D20 far outshines the hCX.You navigate through all of the menus by touch. This is such a relief from using hCX's mini joystick and side buttons. What's nice about the D20 is you can move the map around by sliding your finger on it, whereas on the hCX joystick you have to sluggishly go at an angle. The D20 works much faster in operation. For example, it refreshes the maps considerably faster than the hCX.This equals less headaches when trying to pinpoint a location.

The layout on the D20 is very straight forward. The main menu contains all of the icons (Map, Where to, Track Manager, Setup, etc.) and you can scroll through all of the features by the arrows on the bottom corners. The hCX has a higher learning curve as you have to manipulate multiple buttons to get somewhere.

GPS Use:

I use the D20 for fitness activities: kayaking, jogging, cycling, and hiking. I can easily plot my map with distance and tracks(breadcrumb trails) onto websites that map .GPX files(Mapmyfitness, Motionbased).I use it too, of course, for auto navigation. The hCX is capable of doing all these things as well, but its not nearly as modern and simple as the D20.Resetting the track took me a few minutes to figure out, but it's simply Setup>Reset>Reset Trip Data. You have to use this command right before you go jogging, biking, rowing, etc. -otherwise your new track will mix in with the prior/current track. It'd be nice to have shortcuts on the D20, but no biggie.

Profiles and Customizing:

A nice feature on the D20 is the ability to create profiles.I have a profile for driving, and one for exercising. It keeps the settings and maps you want selected automatically saved into the profile (i.e- City Nav for auto, Topo for exercising). You can also rearrange or get rid of buttons in the main menu, specifically for each profile. This is extremely useful in having all the features you need in one or two screens. With the hCX, you can customize the features, although it is not nearly as simple to rearrange as the D20. The hCX does not have profiles.

Overall:

While it was quite unfortunate I dropped the hCX in the lake, the D20 has proven to be a suitable upgrade and replacement. The D20 and hCX both have their strengths and weaknesses, but i'm definitely enjoying the experience of the user friendly D20.I have yet to determine it's true ruggedness, but will post updates if anything else should be mentioned.

Uniden 5.8GHz Expandable Water-Submersible Handset Phone with Call Waiting/Caller ID Review

Uniden 5.8GHz Expandable Water-Submersible Handset Phone with Call Waiting/Caller ID
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Compared to the previous model, WXI377, which I've owed for over two years, this model fulfilled most of my wishes what the older model lacked...

For example, 5.8GHz digital spread spectrum is much more secure than the old 900MHz analog. Now the keyboard is also backlighted as well as the display. The onboard speaker is nice and comes in handy. You can expand the phone to have more handset(TWX977 will give you the very same handset) and have features like transferring a call, page, intercom and conferencing, etc. Phonebook has much larger capacity, and now you can store two numbers per name, and personalize the ring tone...

Some same old problems still exist. The old WXI377 when it was submerged in bathtub, the cavity around the earpiece speaker would be filled with water that blocked the sound.I had to shake it vigorously get the water out, otherwise the volume would so low it was hard to hear the other party. The new model is still the same way, and shaking the water out would take more effort, seems to me.The chain dialing still only works when in a call(when you are connected, you can bring up the phonebook and dial another number.Works well for dialing a phone card access number first, then the real phone number from your phonebook). If you start by keying in a few digits, like "#0P"(I have a 2-line switch, #0 will access my other line. P is for a 1-second pause), you can't get in the phonebook and bring up another number onto the screen to concatenate them together then dial all at once...

The one area it screwed up is the redial number. On the old phone when you display the number by pressing Redial, you can hit Delete button to delete the last digit by each press. So you can edit the number by getting rid of the extra digits last time you entered when on hold and "press 1 go to this menu" or "press 2 for voicemail", etc.The new model does not allow you to edit the redial number.Hit Delete will wipe out the the entire line. This is the only problem I can remember now, that doesn't exist on the old model before...

UPDATE 6/22/08: If you want to expand, you don't have to buy the TWX977 Accessory Handset.Just buy another one of this, then set the base to a dumb charging station just like the TWX977, and deregister then register with the existing base (this what I've done.I've got two of these, ready to get a third one now). This way, if your old WXI477's base goes south, you can activate the other(though charging will be a minor problem, as you'd be left with one base and two handsets. But the system will still be functioning/limping.)My first was bought a year ago and second in Feburary of '08.So far, the first one's rubber piece surrounding the display, has deteriorated to make the two look not just half a year apart, but more like a couple years of use.The oil on my face has caused this, though I don't feel like I got particularly greasy face...

M83a2 Electric Auto Airsoft Machine Gun Laser M16 Review

M83a2 Electric Auto Airsoft Machine Gun Laser M16
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This gun is very good! It shoots at a decent speed and it is very accurate for a certain distance until it starts to curve(I don't know the distance, but I would say at least as long as the average backyard, if not more). This gun should be wonderful for backyard wars(haven't got to battle with it yet). I thought I would need a more powerful gun, but I realized that nobody would want to play with me if I kept shooting them with a really powerful gun at short distances. The hop up works extremely well. I can aim the gun down (no more than an angle of 45 degrees) and the BB's still curve up enough so it doesn't hit the ground(because of the hop up). The only thing I don't like about the gun is that the barrels are made of cheap plastic and can break off the gun easily. When my friend was playing with it, he accidentally hit me with the barrel and it snapped off. I fixed it with superglue and heavy duty tape though. The seller, Airsoft Central, is awesome and I give them a 5 out of 5! Overall, this gun is probably the best gun you could get for the price for backyard wars. It is defiantly my gun of choice(for backyard wars of course ;)]!

Blackburn Flea Rear Flasher Bicycle Taillight Review

Blackburn Flea Rear Flasher Bicycle Taillight

Great light to chuck on the back of my helmet strap for a higher lightpoint to supplement the mars 3.0 on my seatpost. I do a lot of night riding and even after a 1 1/2 months the battery is still not dead (chase mode, at least 15 hours). It's super bright but i only use it as supplementary to a more comprehensive light system (Cygolite 350 mitycross on front, mars 3.0 on seatpost, cateye on the rear rack point on my road bike. This is typically combined with reflective gear when I'm doing serious riding. I'd much rather not get hit by a car again and a lack of visibility will be no excuse if I do.) I'm also going to add the front flea soon to the front of my helmet and possibly one for the handlebars of my commuter bike).

However, I would invest your money in the usb charging version. I haven't had to use the battery charging system yet but it seems like a hassle.

- Took +4 months for the battery to finally wear down. And I was wrong about the battery charging system, its wicked simple and easy; is excellent in case I go on any ultra-long bike journeys.

This gun is great! It came well within the shipping days and worked like a charm from the moment I got it out of the box! The battery lasts a decent while, for me it goes for about 4 hours. Its overall fps is 260 and shoots about 400 bbs a minute. Its accuracy and power extend to about 80 yards, so with the scope and automatic and single shot settings, this gun is very versatile. In the hands of the right person, they could easily command the battlefield! GREAT BUY!

Product Description:
Description A 1:1 scale replica of an actual M85 machine gun, this Double Eagle electric airsoft gun is remarkably authentic. The Double Eagle fires round plastic pellets known as BBs, which are propelled out of the gun by compressed air. The advantage of the airsoft machine gun, however, is that players can safely train, simulate, or play with the gun without fearing serious injury. The M85 looks, feels, weighs, and functions just like a real firearm, but is built for casual recreation rather than weaponized use. In fact, the only way you can typically tell a real-steel firearm from an airsoft gun is the blazing orange tip and the BBs that fire when you pull the trigger. The Double Eagle M85 is considered a low-powered electric rifle (LPEG) due to the use of a plastic gearbox (PGB), making it an ideal entry-level introduction to electric airsoft guns. The M85--which shoots up to 260 fps--includes a battery, charger, flashlight, and electronic sight for a perfect all-in-one airsoft setup.Semi-Auto/Full-Auto selectable. Fires 6mm ammo @ apprx. 260 FPS. 500 rounds per min. 50 round capacity. 7.2V 700mAh. Folding stock. Includes battery & charger, adjustable electric red cross sight, adjustable laser unit, tactical light, mock silencer, safety glasses, sling, airsoft tools, and a few BBs. Variable Hop-up system.

Cateye HL-EL600RCSingle Shot LED Bicycle Light
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The light is fairly bright, nothing spectacular, but bright enough for Chicago commuting. I read many negative reviews about the bracket, however my main issue lies with the extremely cheap and flimsy plastic casing. I have never dropped the light (though I believe a light costing approximately 100 bucks should hold up against a 3-4 foot fall without any issues), but the the casing cracked in my backpack. I always try to be careful with my backpack for I keep my sunglasses, graphing calculator, cell phone, and mp3 player in the bag, and they have not sustained any damage. The battery takes a long time to recharge, and its an all around bad buy. I would not recommend this light to anyone.

E-Zip Mountain Trailz Electric Bicycle, Model# EZ-MT8-BL Review

E-Zip Mountain Trailz Electric Bicycle, Model# EZ-MT8-BL
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Assembly: I've never assembled a bicycle before, but some assembly is required for the e-zip.I managed to put it together in about 3-4 hours, and someone with experience could probably do it in 1-2 hours. Some parts of the instructions aren't terribly clear, but not too much assembly is necessary. The electric components are already installed, so it's just a matter of putting together the handlebars, front wheel and brakes, and seat.

Range: The claim is that this bike has a range of 18-24 miles, but I don't think this is accurate. My bike will go about 13 miles before the engine appears to run out of energy. The battery indicator says that there's still almost half the energy left in the battery at that point, as there should be, but it acts as though it's run out of juice.

Fortunately my bike commute is just 13 miles, so I can manage with the reduced range.A couple of times when I haven't put as much effort into pedalling, it's run out of juice on me after just about 10 miles, and it's a tough bike to pedal without the electric motor going as it's so heavy. As long as I put some decent effort into pedalling and go a little easy on the throttle, it will get me the 13 miles. You actually don't want to go much further than that anyway, because sealed lead acid battery life is significantly reduced when the battery is discharged more than 80%.

Performance: On my regular mountain/road hybrid bike, my commute takes about an hour, averaging about 13 mph.On this electric bike, the commute takes about 50 minutes averaging about 15 mph.The ride takes significantly less energy, as the throttle makes pedalling much easier.Accelerating and climbing hills (and going against a headwind) in particular are a piece of cake in comparison.

The bike has 7 gears, but I only use about 4, if that many. Most of my ride is spent in the lowest gear going at about 17 mph.If I'm climbing a hill I'll probably drop it down a gear or two until I reach the top.As I mentioned, the motor is engaged with a throttle on the right handlebar, below which is a battery level indicator (full/half/empty).The battery attaches into a slot on either side of the rack on the back of the bike (only 1 battery is provided and necessary). The bike is pretty heavy (50-60 pounds), especially with the heavy lead battery on board. The charger is included and the battery is removable, so you can take it off and bring it with you for recharging.

Battery: Recharging usually takes me 4 hours. The charger claims it takes 6-8 hours, but that's probably if the battery is fully discharged (and you don't want it to be, as that will reduce the battery lifetime, as mentioned). It costs about 0.2 cents per mile (2 cents per ten miles) to recharge the battery, so it's practically free. The battery should last 150-300 charges, and costs about $100 to replace. You also want to recharge it immediately after use to maximize the lifetime of the battery. When I get to work I bring the charger and battery inside and recharge it at my desk, and do the same at home.

The only complaints I have are that I wish the range were a little better and the bike were a bit lighter.A few of the parts are a bit on the cheap side (like the seat), but easily replaceable with better parts if you're so inclined. For $350 I really can't complain. An electric bike conversion kit on its own will cost close to $300, and a regular mountain bike on its own will cost on the order of $400, so $350 for a combination of the two is great.I didn't find any other electric bikes for under $500, so this bike is a great value as long as you don't need to go more than 13 miles at a time.

Good airsoft kit for the beginner
Comes with goggles, which are not bad, wish they were not tinted though.

Also comes with a pistol P70 that runs on 4 AAA batteries.I have not been able to get this pistol to work and plan on calling Crosman (heard their customer service is good - I hope so)I wish it was a spring operated gun like the P-36 but it's not.The holster that holds the pistol is very good quality and impressive.

The main gun the R71 seems to be built fairly sturdy. The stock is removable by pushing a button and sliding upwards.
The "silencer" is removable by unscrewing it, thus making gun much shorter without the stock or silencer.
The gun shoots fairly quickly, but it is hard/impossible to aim due to the BB reservoir being the fake scope that you can't look through (probably the only negative about this gun). You can't remove the "scope" because then you would have but maybe 5 BB's in the chamber.
There are 3 settings safe, semi automatic and full automatic.

I've tested .12 and .2 gram BB's and both shoot decently with this gun.
This gun is not strong enough to shoot through cans or card board etc like more expensive guns but is why I think it's good for kids and beginners and I will easily give this a 5 star rating if customer service works out an exchange for the pistol and it is as good as the rifle.

Edit 1/5/10:Customer service was prompt and great and they are replacing the pistol that didn't work.Because of this I easily give this package a 5 star rating.Kids are still having a ball with them!I will edit how the P70 pistol is when It arrives.

Good package I recommend it.

Brinkmann 800-2660-1 Q-Beam 3 Million Max Power Spot/Flood Light Review

Brinkmann 800-2660-1 Q-Beam 3 Million Max Power Spot/Flood Light

I tried two other rechargeable lights that would only hold a charge for about 2-3 minutes. The first one I didn't keep my receipt from Lowes and it went to the junk. The second one I took back from wally world having kept everything as the main problem with these lights is they take a lot of power to run them. The brinkmann is heavy but that's because it actually has a lead acid battery like in your car. It will honestly go 25 minutes between charges and it will light up the night like no other light I ever had. Take your binoculars because it will shine on an object so far away that you won't be able to see it with the naked eye that's how good it is. It's heavy and it gets hot around the globe but who cares....just cowboy up and carry it around.

ELECTRIC D 91 UZI AIRSOFT FULLY AUTO GUN AIR SOFT Review

ELECTRIC D 91 UZI AIRSOFT FULLY AUTO GUN AIR SOFT

For the money this is a fine gun. It is a full scale model. Of course it is going to be thicker than an AK...so is the original for Pete's sake.

As per manual...yes it is not for the Uzi but big deal. You don't even need the manual to get this gun going...all the instructions are pictured on the box. Pull back bolt to load bbs...plug in battery to charge than place mag/battery into mag well...push safety and fire. Really hard to figure out? ! If you need the manual to figure out how to operate this gun than you should not own one in the first place.

Only reason I gave this four stars IS because it did come with the wrong manual...but I found the broken English used in the instructions quite funny and was well worth having...

Bushnell Yardage Pro 800 Compact Rangefinder Review

Bushnell Yardage Pro 800 Compact Rangefinder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Purchased this unit new for $160.Good performance - with a little practice, was getting readings well over 800 yards, even in bright sunlight. Also like the fact that it uses standard AAA cells.

The housing design leaves a bit to be desired - it's bulky, and the battery cover is not very secure. Can see losing the cover easily. Not as ergonomic as more recent models.

Overall, $160 for a rangefinder that has genuine 800 yard performance, is a good deal.

Update 2009:My Yardage Pro is still going strong.Yes, I did end up losing the battery cover, but Bushnell sent me a replacement for a small fee.A few wraps of black friction tape keep it in place, and the batteries last long enough that replacing the tape isn't a big deal.

It's pretty durable - I lost it out in the field last November, and returned and luckily found it the next day.Covered in frost, it was good to go after a short drying-off period.

Took it out the other day, and was getting readings off buildings as far as 840 yards distant.Got my money's worth for sure.

I am very pleased with this product. I have been using mine for about 1 year now,it works well.So many items last 30 days and quit, but this one works as good as new. Has been under my car, in my camper, in the basement, the attic, and more.I have dropped it, banged it, and misused it and it keeps working.Light is nice and bright, too. I like the hex-shaped sections, they keep it from rolling around, and I like the fact that it will stand or hang.It casts a broad light for work areas. The switch has an old-fashioned, quality feel to it.Positive action, no slop.Uncommonly good quality in this day and age!

Super Turbo 800watt Elite 36v Electric Scooter "NEON GREEN" (Now includes Econo/Turbo mode button!) Review

Super Turbo 800watt Elite 36v Electric Scooter 'NEON GREEN'
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had my Super 800 for just over a month...in a word, it ROCKS!

Fact: Last Sunday I took it on a full throttle "Bonsai Run," just to see how far it would go. The course is a bit hilly as it follows the ocean's cliffs. I weigh 155 pounds, and I have a trunk on my scooter, and I carried an extra (30 pound) battery pack. So figure a payload of 190 pounds. Full throttle the entire way, I was hoping to break 10 miles (16 km). I made 12.6 miles (20.2 km)!!! in just under an hour. The battery pack still had some oomph in it, but I turned into a pretty steep hill and decided It'd be better if I just switched battery packs at that point and came home. A week later, today, I tried a different approach: this time I kept the throttle at about 2/3 speed the entire way. I just got back, I made 15.1 miles (24.3 km) in 80 minutes! I switched out the battery pack, turned around, and really went easy on the throttle, just to see how long the fresh pack would last. I got home in 1 hour 34 minutes and 50 seconds!

If you have owned scooters in the past, you can appreciate the significance of these numbers. Most scooters out there today are either toys for the kids, or extremely expensive ($1,500++) adult commuter vehicles. The Super 800 delivers a performance nearly equal to machines far more expensive, at a fraction of the cost.

I also calculated some extremely conservative operating numbers. I can "fill the tank" of my scooter for 5 cents in electricity where I live. It's actually cheaper than that, as my rate is lower during the night, when I do most of my charging, but I'll use the more conservative number. Assuming that nickel gets me just 10 miles (16 km), again, let's be extra conservative, that means that it would cost me less, significantly less, than $1.50 to go 300 miles, the average range of a car here in the States. How much does it cost you to fill your tank? $30? $40? $60? Well I can do it for LESS than $1.50 !!!

Before you buy any scooter, you must, you simply must, do what I did. Get the phone number of the firm selling it, and simply try to call them. What you will find is the first dirty little secret of the electric scooter business: Almost zero customer service. Before, during, and after the sale, there is all but no recourse other than the web to contact your seller. Most don't even list phones, and those that do, almost never answer. Leave a message? At your own risk, and time. It is all but impossible to reach a live human, even to ORDER THE PRODUCT!!! Think what will happen if you have a problem after you've bought the thing. Which leads us to the second dirty little secret of the electric scooter world: they are all made in China, and you are, sooner or later, going to encounter a problem. You are going to want to get help, like, really fast. How will you do this if you weren't even able to reach a real person while you were trying to buy the thing?!

Well, the answer, my friend, is buy the Super 800 from Chris at Super Cycles & Scooters! I would suggest you try to reach the "other" guys first. Test my experience, see if you can even get a human on the line. Then call Chris. You are going to want to talk to him before you place your order anyway, as you want to discuss with him issues specific to your location and your operating environment (Are you heavy, thin? Will you be operating on hills? How steep? How long is your one-way commute?). You might consider talking to him about a trunk, gearing for hills, and an additional battery pack and/or charger.

My own experience? I had a control box (computer) go bad on my scooter on a Friday. I called Chris on the East Coast (I live on the West Coast). Monday (!!!) I had the replacement control box, complete with full instructions on how to replace it! It took me all of 10 minutes and I was back on the road! I noticed that after a month, the brakes were not as effective as they had been; remember, it's pretty hilly here, so I really use the brakes. A lot. So what to do? Simple, I logged on to Chris's website, entered the user name and password, and Voila! I was able to watch a video walking me, step by step, through the process of adjusting the brakes. It took me 20 minutes, and this was my first time. Anybody else out there do videos for their customers?

So, last thought: simply read the reviews of every other product, and every other seller. Note that electric scooters, and companies, in general get atrocious reviews. Then check out Chris and his Super 800. Five star, five star, five star, five star. When I was in High School, our calculus teacher insisted on grading on a curve. If we were to grade Chris, Super Cycles & Scooters, and the Super 800 on a curve, we'd have to give each at least 10 stars!

Go Speed Racer, Go!
