Brunton 26 Watt Foldable Solar Array Review

Brunton 26 Watt Foldable Solar Array
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I like this panel, I like it a lot.Right now I use it to charge a all of my electronics. It folds up nicely, and doesn't weigh much.I agree with the other posters on the positive things about these panels.

These panels as individuals (not linked) are serving me and my teams very well in Iraq.We use them to power everything from MP3 Players and cell phones to advanced GPS tracking systems.

There's only one problem I have, and that is linking more than two panels together. The instructions and box say it can be done, and the box says it includes a linking cable, but there is nothing that says how.You are supposedly able to link up to three panels together, but I am unable to accomplish this no matter how I configure the cables. I've written directly to Brunton's service department for guidance, but after a month I've only gotten the read receipts from them.No answer so far.No one on any blog or forum can tell me how this is done. They are expensive, so finding someone that has bought more than one is rare.

All three panels came with the exact same cables, so I don't think I'm missing anything. There are two connection ports on each panel (it will charge two small items at the same time). As far as cables go you get one with clamps (like the kind that connects to a car battery), one female car cigarette lighter-style outlet, and another cable that has four adapters on one end and a single adapter (for plugging into the panel) on the other.

You have to use the four-ended cable to link panels. The problem is that when you plug the end with four ends into a panel there is no more room to plug in another cable. The two prongs sticking out of the sides prevent this.

Anyone with one panel could see what I mean.Try plugging both ends of your linking cable into your one panel, as would be the case on the middle panel in a series of three. Then consider how you would link three of them together.

I would love to hear from anyone that has accomplished linking more than two of these together.

Linking them together would allow us to power (real time) our field laptops and mini-satellites, we could even recharge our military satcom radio batteries.Unfortunately this isn't the case yet.

The panel is excellent and I like it a lot.I gave it a three star rating because it claims to be able to do something that it cannot (link three panels). The instructions are also lacking in this area.Brunton's customer service also leaves something to be desired, which should be your only negative consideration if you're buying only one.

Update:

I finally got a reply from Brunton concerning linking the panels. Here it is:

"To your question... The four-pronged linking cable can make the
connection between panels a bit tight. Admittedly, the design isn't the
best, but I've got three of our 26s here, hooked them up, and read
increased amperage. On the panels where you're forced to use both the
single and multi-tipped wire, I've found it's best to turn the four-tip
plug perpendicular to the flat ground, making it easier to fit the
single wire. I'll be the first to say it isn't pretty. It creates a
slight fold in the panel, and doesn't allow it to sit completely flat,
but it does make the connection, and since there's no solar receiver
over the output, it doesn't affect the efficiency.

As I said, the multi-prong cord isn't the best design. It's something
I'm trying to get them to change in the development department. Keep in
mind that hooking multiple panels together doesn't increase the total
voltage coming out of your last panel, but rather simply increases the
amperage. "

Update * Click on "See customer Image" underneath the main product pic to see what this looks like *

So I broke out my panels and gave it a try.Yes, by bending the panel you can make the two fit. This causes me some real problems. My initial intent was to take some cord and tie the panels down (using the nicely grommeted holes in each corner).I can't do this because the corner that's bent can't be tied down tightly. When I pull on the corner that's bent down (see pic), you can hear the plastic under strain. The four prong outlet tries to straighten out with no where to go, when you do this.I wouldn't want to tie the panel down tightly for fear of breaking something.

The answer to this of course is to make your own single male-male cable. In the rest of the email the service rep offered to send me some cables and cords that I could splice together.

One other thing I noticed is that the female cigarette outlet is completely smooth on the inside, there are no ridges or insets.Any male connector you insert into it will not "lock" into place. There is some resistance that will keep it from just falling out, but it doesn't take much to come loose.I don't think this would be a problem if the panel were laying flat.I imagine that if it were hung up the weight of some cables could cause it to come out. I've had no problems at all with powering any device using this outlet.

Update:* Added another image showing the hook up to an EEE ASUS*

I also own an Asus Eee PC 900 16G.One of the prongs on the four ended cable will fit directly into the laptop. It being such a small laptop the panel WILL run it real time while charging the battery (just like it was plugged into the wall).

According to Brunton the panel kicks out 26 Watts, and says it's at 12 Volts. This means that

12 Volts X 2.2 Amps = 26 Watts

(i'm rounding slightly up on the Amps)

The EEE ASUS Power pack says it has an output of :

12 Volts X 3 Amps = 36Watts

There's obviously a little play in here, but the Brunton panel is using the same Volts at less amps, so it's safe to plug it into your EEE PC.In testing this personally it did in fact run the laptop real time and charge the battery at the same time.

I would raise my review to four stars (I can't modify it), because the panel does do what it says it will do, but it has a design flaw that makes it hard to deal with.

4th Update:

For some reason all the pictures I uploaded months ago are now gone.I don't know if that's an Amazon thing, or what.I'll try to replace them.

Might as well say something about the panel....

It's been over a year and a half and it's still holding up, no problems with wear and tear.I'm very pleased.

I purchased this to use with a Black Diamond Icon headlamp. The battery fits the compartment perfectly, and it's very easy to plug the recharger into the headlamp ( there's a connector with a rubber cover on the outside of the headlamp battery compartment ).Though I have no need for all the power adapters, I think this is a nice feature - not a bunch of different chargers - just slide in the adapter you need. The battery was already charged when I got the kit.The charge lasted much longer than the rechargeable AA batteries I have been using, and it didn't take long to recharge the battery pack when it did run down. This is a nice, well designed battery pack.

Porsche Battery Maintainer Review

Porsche Battery Maintainer
Average Reviews:

I own a 2008 Porsche Cayman that sits in my garage for 2 to 3 weeks between drives. Although I was told to use a battery maintainer or risk getting a dead battery, I did not. Well, I learned the hard way and my battery did in fact die. It cost me $400 for Porsche to replace the battery and test the system. I immediately ordered this item to prevent such a thing from happening going forward. It is very simple to use...plug the charger into a standard wall outlet, the other end into your cigarette lighter outlet in the car. The wire is so thin that you can close the door without kinking the wire. I highly recommend this product to avoid the same costly mistake I made!

MAHA MH-C401FS 100 min AA / AAA Battery Charger and Wall AC/ Car DC adapter with Scratch-Guard Protector Bag and X4 2700 Mah Nimh Batteries ***Includes Accessory Bag*** Review

MAHA MH-C401FS 100 min AA / AAA Battery Charger and Wall AC/ Car DC adapter with Scratch-Guard Protector Bag and X4 2700 Mah Nimh Batteries ***Includes Accessory Bag***
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The MAHA MH-C401FS is marketed as a "100-minute battery charger". But when you use it to charge up the 2700mAh batteries that came with this charger, you'll most likely have to wait for around 160 minutes. So who lied?

The fact is, C401FS charges AA cells at a fixed current of 1000mA (in Fast mode). Several years ago when this charger was first introduced, the average capacity of an AA NiMH cell was much lower. Perhaps back then, it took about 1.6 hours (or 100 minutes) to fully recharge a 1600mAh cell. But today's AA NiMH cells have much higher capacities. So to charge up a 2700mAh cell, it now takes about 2.7 hours (or 160 minutes) to finish the job.

Aside from the misleading marketing claim, the C401FS is actually a decent charger. It is a 'Smart' charger that charges each cell individually, and stops when each cell is full. It also allows you to select between Fast (1000mA) and Slow (300mA) charging. Unless you are in a hurry, choose the slow mode since it is better for the cells. Just remember that it takes about 9 hours to fully recharge a 2700mAh cell in slow mode.

Unfortunately, the C401FS is also way over-priced for a simple charger in today's market. For about the same cost, you may want to consider an advanced battery charger/analyzer, such as the La Crosse BC-900 or BC700 instead.

VDC Electronics BatteryMINDer Charger, Maintainer, Desulphator - 1.3 Amp, 12 Volt, Model# 12117 Review

VDC Electronics BatteryMINDer Charger, Maintainer, Desulphator - 1.3 Amp, 12 Volt, Model# 12117
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
...if you own deep cycle batteries.I bought one of these in 2001 as an experiment to desulphate eight 6 volt 225 amp hour deep cycle batteries. The RV park where we were staying used them in their golf carts. They were going to throw 6 Trojan 225 ah batteries in the dumpster. These batteries were in bad shape as evidenced by the constant 6 amps being drawn after being hooked up to their "super" charger for many hours.Essentially, these batteries were so sulphated that they would not accept any more charge. With many chargers the charge current will drop to "0" as battery resistance increases when fully charged.

I mentioned tossing the batteries in the dumpster might be illegal. If they let me have them to do some tests and possibly recover them, I would dispose of them properly if I had no luck.I had just installed a solar panel system with a 2500 watt inverter on my 5th wheel and had only 1 pair of golf cart batteries that was already at least 2 years old.I needed more reserve battery power and calculated that I would need at least 6 of these batteries for the inverter to be of any real use to me.When using batteries in this manner, it is best to use batteries that are in similar condition and ideally from the same lot.Six new batteries were going to cost about $520 with tax.

I got them back to my rig and baselined the charge they would accept on my 10 amp charger.Indeed, they were not accepting any more charge. I paired these old batteries in series to get four 12 volt configurations and spent the next 4 weeks (1 week per pair) on this desulphator.I continued this process until my charger's ammeter would go to zero when the batteries were full, an indication that they were now in good shape.Ultimately, 2 of the batteries would prove to be unrecoverable, but the other 4 plus the 2 I already owned eventually recovered about 90% of their original amp hour capacity based on some standard tests I ran.

My inverter, combined with these recovered batteries, would run my 15,000 BTU air conditioner for nearly an hour, more than enough time to cool our 5th wheel while preparing and consuming lunch in 106 temps in Ca. deserts. The batteries would be nearly fully recharged by the solar panels and charge line from the tow vehicle by the time we reached our destination for the evening. With loving maintenance and care, they had lasted another 5 years providing countless hours of dry camping service! Finally, in 2006, I replaced them with new ones before an extended camping trip.

This charger/desulphator requires 115 vac and a minimum of 11 volts in the battery before you connect to it.So, if your battery is dead, be sure to bring it up the 11 volt minimum before hooking the unit up or it could overheat and be ruined. Also, most of the cheaper old style battery chargers don't have any voltage regulation. Consequently, the voltage these chargers supply to a fully charged battery can exceed well over 14 volts and will eventually "cook" the electrolyte out if you leave them hooked up.They can also overheat the battery, permanently damaging the thinner plate structure of automotive (starting batteries). The VDC model I bought in 2001 can be left on to maintain the charge in lead acid batteries.Check your operator instructions to be sure.

Shortly after recovering these batteries, I bought another desulphator from an Arizona solar supplier capable of desulphating a 1600 a/h battery bank that operates only off of the battery bank. This constant desulphating process along with proper battery maintenance is probably what helped sustain these batteries for an additonal 5 years. In the absence of a desulphator, deep cycle batteries should be "equalized".The interval depends on usage.I was doing it monthly. The equalization process requires a special charger and can be hard on batteries.Desulphation performs a similar function without the harshness of equalization.Desulphation plus judicial use of equalization can extract maximum life out of your deep cycle batteries.I wouldn't be without either one of these desulphators or a 3 or 4 stage battery charger.

A final note:Never let your batteries sit in a discharged condition. As a battery discharges, the sulphate that forms will be easier to return to solution whn prmptly recharged. If you let it sit, the sulphate can harden and be nearly impossible to return to solution.

Be Prepared? AA Solar Charger Review

Be Prepared? AA Solar Charger
Average Reviews:

This solar charger is one of the best configurations that I've come across. It managed to charge 4xAA batteries while sitting on my vehicle's dashboard during an overcast day. I figure that if it can pull a charge from the sun through both the clouds and the UV screen of the windshield glass while still being able to fold into something that is about wallet sized then it absolutley earns a place in my backpack.

There are a few things to note that aren't mentioned in the item description:
1. This only has four gromments, not six.
2. It is NOT waterproof/water resistant in any way. A single raindrop on the charging circuit will likely short it out.
3. The batteries can be a little difficult to pull out of the charger. You can't grip the battery by the sides and pull. I've always needed to use my fingernails or something like a key to pry them out.

All in all, I'd say this is the best options out there for keeping your AA flashlights, GPS, and other gizmos powered while enjoying the great outdoors.

I've owned the Solio for over 3 months now and it's been a life saver as there has been many times my battery died on me in the middle of nowhere. I recently went on a 16 mile backpacking trip in Half moon bay and it def. gave me alot of battery life. Due to the unnecessary processes and programs my phone needs in order to run, my cellphone battery only lasts about 7 hours and the Solio gave me an extra 8 hours. Not bad. Saved me the hassle of purchasing an extra phone battery.

Product Description:
With more than one million units sold to date, the Solio Classic is the most popular solar charger on the market. Well now the Classic just got better with this release of the Classic-i hybrid charger, which is more powerful and looks better than ever. With solar panels that are 20 percent more efficient than in earlier models, the Classic-i easily charges all of your handheld electronic products whether you're at home or on the go. The Classic-i works by absorbing power from the wall socket, a computer, or direct sunlight, and then storing the energy within its internal battery. Once the charger's battery is full, you can use it to power your cell phone, smart phone, iPod, MP3 player, PDA, Bluetooth headset, game player, GPS, fish finder, or digital camera--more than 3,200-plus devices in all. This versatility helps the Classic-i excel as a travel companion, a primary power source for remote locations, or an emergency backup power supply.
The universal charger is environmentally friendly and cost-effective, as sun-based energy is completely free and creates no harmful impacts. And the solar design couldn't be simpler, with a fan-blade outlay that achieves maximum solar area when in use. Just spread out the blades, expose them to direct sunlight either outdoors or affixed to a window, and get ready to take your power on the road. You can use the sun to fully charge the Classic-i's battery for later use, or you can charge your device directly through the Classic-i. One hour of sunshine provides roughly 20-plus minutes of talk time or 50-plus minutes of MP3 music (depending on the device).
To charge the Classic-i's battery without using the sun, simply connect the charger to your computer using the included USB charge-in cable, or plug the included wall charger into the wall. Plus, the energy in the charger's 1,650 mAh lithium-ion battery doesn't need to be redeemed immediately, as it stores the juice for more than a year. The Classic-i does not come with a preselected variety of adapter tips, but is instead compatible with all i-Go power tips (sold separately), including i-Go mini USB, i-Go micro USB, i-Go iPhone/iPod, i-Go Samsung, and i-Go Blackberry versions. The Classic-i hybrid charger measures 2.5 by 1.3 by 4.7 inches (W x H x D), weighs 2.75 ounces, and carries a one-year warranty.
About Solio
The sun's energy has always been recognized as powerful. How powerful? The amount of energy that falls on the Earth in one hour is the same amount used by the world's population in one year. With these details in mind, Better Energy Systems created the Solio--a hybrid solar charger for small, portable, electronic gadgets. It was introduced at San Francisco's MacWorld in 2005, where it won Best of Show. The Solio quickly caught the consumer's imagination and interest, because it combined convenient, easy-to-use renewable energy with cutting-edge, award-winning design and engineering. With this combined value and appeal, the company continues to receive prestigious awards and acknowledgements for its family of Solio models, and has now sold more solar systems than any other company in the world.

Fair warning, I know less than squat about car batteries and chargers. I left the hatch open on my car for several days and I guess the light being on drained the battery. So I went down to the auto parts store and picked this out by the innie-minnie method. Basically, I liked that it was not as huge like the other models and it said it would jump start as well as charge (also tests alternator). Looked good to me.

Back in the garage, I had time so rather than jump start, I selected charge and everything seemed to go according to plan. The charger has a meter and it showed that battery was partially drained (needle did not reach into green zone but was not in red either). That makes sense since I had enough juice to turn the lights on but not enough to turn over the engine. After plugging it in, the display on the charger said "charging" and so I went away, came back some hours later, and it was done. Disconnected the charger and turned the key and the engine turned over like a jet. So based on that, I conclude that charger worked exactly as advertised. Hope that helps.
